Paint the Sea in Oils Using Special Effects

It's hard for me to review this book, since it has gotten so many great reviews, and I hate being one of the first somewhat negative reviews. He did talk a lot about the nuts and bolts of waves and water, which was nice, but the practical side of the book is where the execution was lacking. Many of the step by step instructions I felt were making too big of jumps, so it was hard to figure out what he was doing. Also, many of the pictures are too small to clearly see what's going on.I know I'm going to get slammed for this, but I honestly got much clearer, practical instruction from a couple of Bob Ross videos I watched, where he really clearly broke down how to paint various kinds of water, waves, etc. I'll probably keep this as a reference, but it won't be my go-to book, I'm sure.

This is one of two excellent books (the other is "Painting Seascapes in Sharp Focus" by Lin Seslar)on how to achieve the effects I desired in seascapes. While I'd recommend Robinson's two other books, "Marine Painting in Oil" and "Master Class in Seascape Painting," there is a lot of redundancies to the superior "Painting the Sea in Oils Using...". I have a number of other seascape painting books, but this is the best for what I want to achieve. How this book might help you to achieve what you want in seascapes will depend on your knowledge, perception, and abilities to start with. I was fairly accomplished using the Bill Alexander/Bob Ross/Robert Warren/Buck Paulson/and others techniques in landscapes, but I wasn't getting the effects wanted using that style of wet-in-wet in seascapes. I had more to learn and this book was great in getting me there.

Originally, I checked it out from the library.Covers composition, palettes, and techniques. Great book with plenty of step-by-step lessons and a ton of tips, tricks and guidelines. A must-have for any seascape painter in any medium.Was surprised to find this book in NEW condition. Seller also packed it very well...a good thing because USPS tried their darndest to destroy it.This is a difficult book to find, and I'm very happy to finally get a copy of my own.

This is the absolute best book available on painting seascapes by master painter E John Robinson. There is no one more skilled or knowledgable.

This is the best book of its kind. Lots of solid guidance, no fluff. All art technique publishers should study Robinson's style and the presentation of the subject and examples.

Very informative on how to achieve the effects of the illustrated paintings

This is just THE book to buy if you want to know the specific techniques for painting water. Even though it is specific to oil painting, it can easily be transferred to acrylic painting as well as water color. A perfect book!
