I ordered the book after being given a loan of it by a friend and I think that wanting my own copy in these circumstances says all that is necessary. The headline title represents a very important and comprehensive part but the subtitle covers a lot of ground too.

Disappointed
The front cover of this book entices you to look inside, but I am dissatisfied with no colour photographs.

A classic
I actually bought a second hand copy which was in very good condition. Despite being written some time ago it has lots of beautiful examples to base ideas on.

Am I missing the point?
I have previously written a well considered but uncomplimentary review on this book, but do not see it anywhere. This is a summary of that review.Despite the fact that the cover is shown in colour, all the illustrations inside the book are not very good qualityblack and white photographs, which do not inspire, in what is after all a visual medium. This is probably the book's worse fault, and I felt quite cheated, having bought the book on the strength of the cover illustration and the blurb. The text is dry, and reads rather like a school textbook. The designs are very much of their time - the eighties - sometimes embarrassingly so, for those of us who have already been there.I concede that I may be missing the point - perhaps this 'Batsford Classic' is supposed to be a 'collector's item', and is not meant to be used for inspiration or to be visually interesting. If this is what you want, then by all means buy it.Steer clear, though if you are looking for a book about embroidered boxes which will compete with more contemporary publications, or if you actually want to make a box, for you will be asleep from boredom or scratching your head with confusion at the text long before you finish your box.The book rates one star for the price - it's cheap!
