The World's Great Speeches: Fourth Enlarged (1999) Edition

I absolutely loved this book. So glad I bought it. It’s hard to put it down.

This wonderful anthology contains 292 great speeches from almost every historical period and from many nations. They range from orations made by ancient Greeks and Romans such as Socrates and Julius Caesar through to speeches by contemporary figures such as Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi.Each speech is preceded by a paragraph putting it in its historical context.This massive volume (920 pages) is complemented by another formidable anthology of important speeches, Safire's  Lend Me Your Ears: Great Speeches in History, Updated and Expanded Edition . Both books are worth consulting by students of oratory and of history.The World's Great Speeches is now in its fourth edition. I hope that its fifth edition will include more speeches by the winners of the Nobel Prize (for example, the Nobel banquet speeches by Albert Camus and Harold Pinter).Also welcome would be more speeches by great writers, artists and scientists (for example, by Albert Einstein), and more speeches by people from places other than the English-speaking countries and Europe.

Packaging was good but the book cover page is torn.

This book contains so many very excellent and memorable speeches. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in history.

Easy to read one once and again...really nice book to have.

Terribly educational. And totally delightful to be reading on the train to work each day. Some speeches surprized me in that I thought I could have done a better job. LOL

Wow!! So much information in one volume!! The most updated edition with new speeches included. Trade paperback quality paper with nicely constructed glossy cover. Very reasonably priced for the over 800 pages printed!!

Lo compré como regalo a un gran amigo que iba a comenzar una andadura pública de relevancia, con el objeto de que sea una fuente de inspiración en sus discursos. El formato, con la contextualización de cada discurso, y la selección, con actores claves en la historia de la humanidad, creo que lo conseguirán.Como puntos negativos: que llegue con algún golpe a pesar de ser nuevo (aunque es evidente que no es por su uso previo, sino por su almacenaje y manipulación); y que desde 1999 no se haya reeditado, por lo que se pierden algunos grandes discursos que me gustaría encontrar en él.Como conclusión, creo que es un gran regalo para alguien que le guste la historia y es una gran fuente de inspiración para quién tenga el honor de poder dar charlas en público.

This book provides an interesting insight on people's worldview and thought processes in various eras and cultures.

J'ai entrepris la lecture de certains discours. Très facile à parcourir et chaque discours diffère du précédent. Il y a une petite introduction qui retrace le contexte, ce qui est souvent bien venu. La présentation chronologique aide aussi à passer certains auteurs.
