Edith SchaefferAffliction: A Compassionate Look at the Reality of Pain and Suffering

God Never Wastes Our Pain
This author’s style—wordy, heavy on description— can be a deterrent to some readers. That being said, her premise—that the God of the Bible sees our pain, draws close to us as we walk through it, and even uses it for his glory—can bring comfort and courage to a suffering Christian.

Changed my view on health outcome
I read Edith Schaeffer's book with hesitation, having been recently given a poor health diagnosis. There were parts of the book that did not seem to apply to me but I quickly found a great deal that did, and her words both touched my heart and opened up my mind to new ways of thinking. I will refer my suffering friends to Affliction.

Suffering.....
There is not preaching or teaching on how suffering purifies a Christian today. This book helps to bring that perspective to light. All people do suffer in this sin cursed and sin heavy ladden world but for a Christian it has eternal as well as temporal significance. This book brings biblical truth to bear on this ignored subject. Highly recommmend this book to those who are confused on this truth.

Personable
I have had a deep affection for the Schaeffers and L'Abri since I became a believer several decades ago. This was the first book on 'suffering' that I read as a young Christian; it is filled with Scriptural insight and Mrs. Schaeffer's personal reflections. I have given many copies away and often use her illustrations with counsellees. This book is a must for Christians helping others.

interesting read
I bought this book for my mother. I cannot speak from personal experience. However, someone had loaned it to her, and she was interested enough that she asked me to buy her her own copy. I know that she said that the last chapter was not what she had expected, and that it was quite thought-provoking.

Affliction
I appreciate Edith Schaeffer's practical approach to living. She challenges us to walk with the Lord in a living relationship and see what our Creator God can do with yielded lives.
