KA-BAR Backpack Kaster Fishing Kit

I purchased this Ka-Bar Backpacker Caster fishing device to put in my sailboat survival emergency waterproof ditch bag. However, I used the fishing device several times before stowing it away with my other survival gear. This is a great gadget to fish with. I have used it for dock fishing. Haven’t caught any fish yet. Handle holds tackle and finger nail clippers.

Good bug out bag tool!

I found this while browsing the Ka-Bar website the other day. I have been eye balling some wood hobo reel designs for a while and am familiar with the classic design as many are Im sure. The nice thing with this is it wont crack and split like wood when exposed to moisture and heat, it is made of a VERY tough material. This is a solid little backup fishing system with little to go wrong. It is very dense and can take some abuse.... but still floats. As a kid my friends and I used to make something very similar out of scrounged items at the local fishing waters using soda bottles, tin cans, or sticks. We would catch some bugs and spent many summer days picking bluegill, bass, crappie, perch, and even a few catfish out of the lakes and ponds within bicycle range.... good times ! On my first trip out I did not catch any monster fish but I did have a blast and it brought back all those summer time memories of my youth! I am considering a personal challenge to see how big of a fish I can land on this thing just to spice up my fishing trips. If you are not familiar with this type of fishing it can be a little fussy, and you must keep in mind that without a pole it is VERY easy for the fish to break your line. Reeling, or winding in the line takes a little practice to keep from tangling up your line when you hook a fish. I have posted a video on Youtube of my first trip out with this showing a little of how it works and what to expect. Zeuki1 is my channel, Backpack Kaster field test. And keep in mind what direction the line winds on the top if you are going after large fish with heavy line or you may ( unlikely but could happen) end up having a large fish unscrew the top of the reel if your not careful. Some Specs. Mine weighs in at 4.2 oz with the line clip or 3.7oz without and this includes 50yds of 10lb spiderwire braided line. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you plan on storing this away in a bug out bag or survival pack, braided line will not coil and bunch up over time like mono filament will. Length is 6 1/4" long and just under 2" at the widest point. The inner compartment is about 4 1/2" deep and tapered down from 1" to maybe 1/2" at the bottom. There is a rubber O ring to seal the compartment. There is enough room for a decent emergency fishing kit, everthing in the picture I show fits with a little room to spare. Take care and tight lines !

Not sure how the head of the kaster is flying off the hand reel of others. Must be some lemons. Mine is sturdy and I can’t imagine it flying off for any reason. Either way, mine is solid, and as a person who is familiar with hand line fishing, the ka-bar kaster seems amazing to me. I’ll test it out soon but just by looking at the make, I feel very confident in the product.

This thing works as all Ka-Bar products do. I walked up to the beach with a medium tackle box and a soda. I took my Ka-bar out and caught three fish in half an hour. Other fisherman (2 of them) who witnessed it were wondering how. I showed them my container of worms I had also in my tackle box that I picked up that morning. I used untangle-able line at 30 pound test so it lasts forever. I used a simple bobber, a hook, and a sinker. It works so good I bought another for my backpack. It has a hollow handle so you can stuff fishing gear in it. On a side note, the fish don’t know what it is so it probably confuses them so they bite on it. It does not have the silhouette of a pole over the water. Oooh it is fun to use. A little challenging to get used to. Once you get a technique down for casting it is fun and useful. It is great for bushcraft and survival as well plus it will probably last forever. I can recommend making them different colors though to find them easier. I would like an orange one.

While I'm a Becker BK-16 kinda guy, I really wanted the Ka-Bar reel, and after some research, I bought it. It's inexpensive, especially in hand. The reel is made from a lightweight, durable plastic that features the ergonomics of a USMC Ka-Bar knife. The top can be unscrewed, and the interior is hollow. I keep 2 worm hooks and 2 small panfish hooks, a catfish hook, a slider float (bobber), a small spoon and a small crankbait. I could add more even, but I keep a tiny Plano tackle kit that is kitted out for common southeast US species. I was able to put about 60 ft of 30 lbs test Spiderwire fishing line onto the "Kaster". 30 lbs is a fair choice when putting together a go bag (eg jugging, traps, "twine"); otherwise, I would go with 15 lbs for just novel/casual usage. LPT: Using a 1/4" piece of Guerilla Tape, secure the line after 2 or 3 wraps. Leave room on the end so you can secure the line with an Arbor knot. This is essential kit for bushcraft. This only means two things- practice and be prepared.

We camp, hike, fish, bike, boat, etc. Basically, we like to do everything but it's not always possible to bring all the things along with you. We always stumbled across cool little spots where we knew there were fish but we had no fishing gear. I love this little hand line because there's something organic and natural about using it. I was also very surprised by how easy and fun it is to use. We caught everything from bass, sunfish, and a gar (which was absolutely unexpected and a first for us). The storage compartment can hold a couple hooks, small bobbers, and a lure or 2 if you want. This is the perfect item to toss in your backpack or hiking gear and bring along to places you would otherwise walk right past.

Bought this as something I can keep in my EDC bag that is at least always in my vehicle when I’m out and about. When it arrived (quickly) it was easy to see that the build quality is great. It is a bit smaller feeling/looking in my giant hands than it appeared in the review videos I watched of it on YouTube, but is very comfortable and provides a solid grip. I took these pics before throwing it into my bag, and finally got a chance to toss it into a fishing pond by the park we occasionally take our kids to when visiting my mother. Pulled out an appx. 4 pound pike and an average 12 inch Goldeye. Having done lots of hand line fishing over the years, this was no problem to use for “reeling,” and only takes a few tosses to figure out how to beat cast it. I’ve got about 95 yards of 10 LB monofilament line on it. The inside accommodates; 8 swivels, 8 hooks, 2 jig heads, 2 small spinners, a pair of 4” worm baits, 6-1.5” neon soft baits, 2 6” leaders, 8 split shot weights, and two small bobbers. Would definitely recommend for someone who wants something on hand for them to take more opportunities without having to worry about having rods and tackle on hand all the time. Will function as well as your experience/skill allows you to function and utilize it.
