Is the 31st of December a filler release date, or official?

If something doesn't have a specific release date, Amazon will display it as December 31st until the actual date is announced. Smash Bros. 4 is going to be released for Wii U sometime in the holiday season of 2014.

Do I need to purchase the Amiibo figure to play the character in game? (like in Skylanders/Infinity)

No, the Amiibo figures are basically an add-on to the game. They are a computer controlled player that you can train with or level up. They are not necessary. Trust me amiibo figures are nice, but don't change the game or make it significantly better.

can 2 players play together from the same game console as long as they each have a controller?

Yes, in fact, as far as it is known, up to 4 players can play this game on the same tv so long as they all have a controller.

What controllers are compatible with the game?

Along with using the 3DS copy of Smash Brothers to control the game, if you don't have a copy of the 3DS version, you can purchase the Smash Controller from the 3DS eshop for 99 cents.
