Will it work for a rifle chambered in 7.62x51 mm?

Absolutely, I recommend 100 yard zero(sight in) for 7.62x51. The manual will show you how to get it properly zeroed. I have this one and the Aimpoint PRO. Best thing you can get for the money and you can leave it turned on for years at a time. The thing is literally bomb proof.

Compared to the Comp M4, will this keep the dot in the same place no matter your viewing angle? I'm not very familiar with red dots vs iron sights.

It's money, after a lot of rounds, through my SIG 556. My only complaint, is that the dot is a little fuzzy.

If one turns off the sight in-between monthly trips to the range how long might the battery last?

My first battery lasted about two (2) years while being continuously turned on the 4th brightness level setting. No need in fumbling arounnd and possibly losing precious time trying to turn a red dot on in an emergency situation. .
