Do *not* buy a SIM card on Amazon; you'll need a new one from AT&T. GREAT HotSpot Device! :)
I'll update if there's a problem once I receive my FREE SIM card with FREE Express Mail from AT&T. The unit comes charged, and everything worked perfectly, connected to my laptop, WiFi name & password printed on sticker. Very, very nice, compact, well-designed device. Easy connection, easy info once I learned to use the built-in electronic screen and "Info". The "ICCID" number is the SIM number, it's under "Info" with the IMEA number in the electronic screen (AT&T will need both numbers for activation). The IMEA is also listed beneath battery. Slide two little metal sliders on side to remove back cover to remove battery. But you don't have to, it's in the electronic screen "Info" :)Persons much more mechanically inclined than I will see that the door to the SIM card is on the side edge, not in the back or under the battery. I would have ruined the device trying to dig out the back compartment if my husband hadn't stopped me. He needed tweezers to get out the SIM card regardless. This is a great, mobile, easy HotSpot device that works just like any Wi-Fi on any device with a great connection. Mobile supposedly for 10 hours, less than hour recharge. There's only one caveat: AT&T will tell you the pre-installed SIM card it comes with, sealed in new packaging, is INVALID. AT&T will give you a good one for FREE. You simply have to replace it, or if you're like me, get someone that can. :) That simple, and you're ready for set-up. *NOTE*: Both the pre-installed SIM card *AND* the SIM card being sold by a separate seller on Amazon that is suggested as being a good companion purchase with this device are INVALID. This according to AT&T themselves. They will send you a new, free one you can use; tell them what device you have and setup a data plan. All you need then is to add a Data plan. This device, according to AT&T, *only* works with a postpaid plan ($50.00/month for 5 G's minimum), however there's no contract. There is a credit check. It will not work with prepaid, it will not work with a lesser plan, no matter what the packaging or Amazon description says. I just spent like 20 minutes on the phone with a very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable AT&T customer service representative who also consulted another department for verification. The one exception is if you already have an AT&T cellphone plan (I do), you can "share" your data package you already have for only $20/month. So that's what I did. It still is postpaid, and there still is no contract on that part of the plan with your new HotSpot device. You'll be given a new number that's only for the HotSpot without a cellphone (Voice) plan component.I'm really glad I bought this great device, I was a little apprehensive because I'm not techie and I've never tried a mobile HotSpot device before. To make it simple, get AT&T to install (instore) or send you a new SIM card that they say works with this device, and then you can set up the device (supposedly) online with ease. You have to add a data plan for it. I'll update if there's a problem, but the connection to my laptop worked seamlessly and looking through the device hardware and software on the electronic screen, it's designed beautifully and is a definite winner! :) :)ps. Oh!, and it DOES receive 4G out of the box! :) Shows right in the screen corner like a Cellphone would with the bars.

ATT plan ruins a good device.
The device is ok but the terrible plan with AT&T is what make this a waste of money. The pre-paid plan in monthly meaning if you buy a 5 GB data on say on April 20 the plan "renews" on April 25th meaning any unused data you will lose. Not only that you will have to buy more data for the following month. The AT&T pre-paid plan is such a rip off that I wouldn't recommend buying this thing.I called ATT about getting a refund for the data I didn't use and of course they refused. Basically you have thirty days to use the data or you lose it and they will not do anything to help you out except asking you to buy a new plan.

A good little unit for your traveling needs, too bad AT&T won't come out with better rate plans for it.
I bought this for use when we travel and in the one trip it has been on in July it worked very well. I bought it with our RV travels in mind but it is so small it's easily packed and carried wherever you go. I liked the ease of always having the same connection through this hotspot where ever we were and not have to jump through the occasional hoops of the hotel logins or the insecurity of public open WiFi hotspots. My ONLY gripes would be not with the device because it works very well, but of course with the cost of data, and the lack of AT&T's new "rollover" data applied to hot spots as with the Go Phones themselves. And "pay as you go" that really means it only works if you keep it active and not pay as you need which would be way nicer.I was told by an AT&T rep that if you don't need to use it enough or want to keep paying for it at the minimum of $25.00 a month for 2GB, that after 60 days of "inactivity" the account would be dropped (closed) and you would need a new SIM card and have to create a new account to get going again and use it.While I wish it was truly "pay as you go" as it says and you only had to pay when you need it, which for me (and others) would be best, I can live with having to get a new SIM card every year as a new SIM card from Amazon is inexpensive. I had already purchased one because I didn't know that the device came with it's own, so I'll be all set next summer when I'll need the unit working again. Between WiFi at home and work I normally don't have a need for this, but when we're traveling, by RV or car, it IS nice to have.Reception is the same as a cell phone, in fact when you create an account you get a phone number from AT&T for the device. So generally if you have a cell signal you'll get good speeds, that said though, I've experienced full signal indicated but slow or no data available on my phone, so be aware. On our recent trip when we stayed near Klamath Falls, Oregon, I was getting 25 MBps download on my iPad through this device. Not too bad.It charges with a standard mini USB style plug connector of the type that is used on many phones and tablets nowadays, especially Samsung which I have, but it came with its own plug cable and removable power adapter so any USB opening can charge it. The battery is also removable from the device and after use and for long term storage I take out the battery after charging it. If on a long drive just get a car adapter of at least the older 1 amp variety, but even a newer 2.1 amp would work, and it will charge while going down the road if you start running low on battery. The battery seemed to last fine but I was curious and tested the above charging to make sure. It worked great. If anything changes I'll update this review as there's still another 2 week trip coming up in September so I'll see what happens then.
