Perfect Piecing Seam Guide
I bought this item on 9/14/15 and was surprised to find out it only measures 4" x 1" because I'd looked at another person's answer in the question area. As many others do, I have the purple vinyl-like strips (Alicia's Attic Q-Tools Sewing Edge) and had previously also bought their QTools Corner Cut 60 degree that has a regular 1/4 inch, a scant 1/4 inch, and an every so slightly plus 1/4 inch markers on it. Because that one is triangular shaped, I bought this item, Perfect Piecing Seam Guide, because of its bottom edge being horizontal (vs. an angle) so I could additionally line up my regular 6" x 1" ruler to it and have an extended edge with which to press the purple vinyl strips against (area below the bobbin case and below the metal plate). I wanted to keep it lined up a scant 1/4 inch still further away from the needle as suggested in the YT video explaining how to use the purple vinyl-like strips. The Perfect Piecing Seam Guide DOES have a scant 1/4 inch measurement (it's like one thread less than a regular 1/4 inch). In lining them up one on top of the other against a thicker straight edge, I compared the Perfect Piecing one with the QTools Corner Cut. I found the QTool's scant 1/4 to measure approximately still another one thread less than the PPSG's scant 1/4 inch (so a total of two threads less than a regular 1/4 inch). This may just be my accuracy or inaccuracy in the measuring process, but I'm satisfied with the idea of this being a useful tool in sewing scant 1/4 inch seams vs. using a different 1/4 inch foot for each of my three sewing machines. As an aside, the purchase of this tool was unfortunately for me another impulsive decision to buy still another overly-priced quilting tool. I could've made do with the purple strips and the QTools Corner Cut I already had. Just like the old Alka Seltzer TV commercial, "I can't believe I ate that whole thing!", I can't believe the price I paid for this tool. I probably could've used one of my many laser cut rulers that had a reliable 1/4 inch marking on it, brought my needle down very close to that 1/4 inch mark or moved my needle every so slightly to the right and placed the purple vinyl against the edge of the ruler. After experimenting with several practice pieces, I probably could've gotten a scant 1/4. But most of us want to get to the "good stuff" about quilting and will find this tool very helpful in getting a consistent SCANT 1/4 inch on our seams. I DO know that I no longer want to use a regular or guestimated 1/4 inch seam as one very popular YT quilting tutorial instructor seems to think it's okay to fudge about. (Ha! I'm guessing that's why she likes to sew all those biased-edged blocks - so she can stretch the edges to fit!) I want to be able to square up my blocks so that they're consistently the same measurement and therefore making for less frustration in assembling the entire quilt. By using a scant 1/4 inch in sewing my seams, there are several more threads available to easily square up my blocks accurately. In summary, you can decide if it's worth it to you whatever price this item is currently going for; it certainly does what it's designed for; hence so many popular reviews. So yes, I can recommend this product -- just not 100% wholeheartedly -- because of the price.

Absolutely love this - worked great on my first quilting project of placemats
This little piece of plastic is fantastic! Being a total beginner at quilting, I just couldn't grasp the idea of a "scant" 1/4" seam which was completely subjective, but which was REQUIRED in order to prevent a TOTAL FAILURE of any pattern (sorry - I'm being facetious - but really that's almost the feeling I get in reading much quilting advice). How could my measurement be the same as that of someone next door, of my own from one quilt to the next, or even from one day or hour to the next? As my home machine is used for all kinds of sewing, I can't leave any narrow guide stuck down forever. The Perfect Piecing Guide solves this problem by allowing me to select a stitch & needle position, use this product to establish the edge of my seam allowance, & attach whatever immovable guide I choose. This, at least, assures that MY "scant" is consistent. In conclusion, I heartily recommend this product as being accurate, easy to use, economical, & which certainly lives up to its promises.

My quilt pieces were never perfect. Now they are!
My ¼” seams were perfect, but my finished pieces were not. My new Janome with its ¼” foot was letting me down. I hadn’t even realized it until I started a postage stamp quilt. I was losing almost ½” every 10 squares. That’s a LOT! Recommended by Harriet Hargrave, I purchased this seam guide to try to get perfect SCANT ¼” seams. It works perfectly! And so easy…just drop the needle through the hole, and place a permanent guide of some type at the edge of the Plastic Seam Guide. I also purchased QTools Sewing Edge, an adhesive purple vinyl strip, which I used as my sewing guide. Instantly my seams went from troublesome to perfect. If your pieces aren’t perfect because your seams are too big, this will solve the problem. I wish I’d done this long ago. Someday I may search for the perfect ¼” foot, but for now I’m one happy piecing-machine.

This is a “scant”1/4 inch gauge.
Description only said 1/4 gauge. If I had known it was a scant 1/4 I would not have purchased it. Quality is nice. I’ll keep it but not what I wanted. I’ll probably never use it.

Accurate seams for quilt making
I recently started a new quilt project. I made a test block first and was glad I did. It was supposed to end up being 13" square with outside seam allowances but it came out only 12.5". Since my cutting was exact I knew it had to be the seam allowance. My sewing machine (which is relatively new to me) has a needle position feature but no lines to show where 1/4" inch is in any position. So I knew this tool would help me get it right. Its easy and quick to use and after sewing a sample and measuring I can see where it will give me a perfect 1/4" seam. You will need moleskin or some other dimensional product with adhesive to but the fabric against to stay at the 1/4". This tool comes in a zippered bag which I like for storage. Every time I need to reset my sewing machine for a quilt project I can take this out and within a few seconds, have my machine set perfectly.

A great little tool
Love the accuracy of this guide. A bit tricky to get the needle into the tiny hole sometimes, but that is the tool’s strength. The other scant quarter inch tool I have has a bit of “play” - makes lowering the needle easier, but also diminishes the accuracy

A very helpful little quilting tool!
If you are having problems with your quilt blocks not measuring up....well this little tool may be very helpful for you.The key to piecing perfect quilt blocks ( assuming you cut them right) is having the perfect scant 1/4 inch! Struggle no more because this little tool helps you to position your needle and then mark your machine by placing masking tape or layers of sticky notes for the perfect scant 1 1/4. Try it ...it works.
