Long drawn out movie
Down as a classic from the 60’s but quite a drawn out movie very slow that halfway through you begin to wish for the end

OVERRATED TEDIUM
BRIEF MOMENTS OF INTERESTING DIALOGUE DO NOT SAVE THIS FROM ITS OVERALL DULLNESS..... THE PRODUCTION VALUES ARE VERY POOR...... MOST OF THE TIME IT FEELS MORE LIKE A FILMED PLAY...... AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY......IF YOU WANT MY COPY CONTACT ME AND I'LL BE GLAD TO SEND IT TO YOU IF YOU PAY FOR THE POSTAGE.

No really, it's 5-star
To appreciate what a splendid film this is, it helps to realize-- That it's based on Diderot's 18th century novel, and retains its 18th century style in dialogue-- formal, not naturalistic, but powerful none-the-less;--That director Rivette did first write and present it as a play, so the film retains that stark formality;-- And that, while Diderot's novel rubbed censors the wrong way, Rivette's movie did it again in the 60s: reviled by Catholic organizations, censored by the French government... it took over a year to be screened in France. So it's an interesting piece of cultural history.Anyway this "Nun" (unlike the recent horror movie) is a powerful exploration of what society has done to cage women and keep male society humming along smoothly on its ball-bearings. Anna Karina is gripping as the woman struggling in her trap-- the nunneries that receive the second daughters of wealthy families so that inheritance won't be divided and weakened; Rivette is fantastic at magisterially pacing the layers of realization Karina works through as a prisoner of two very different nunneries, and finally of a very high-class whorehouse... a progress shown as completely logical. In case you don't know director Rivette, his films unfold very slowly: You have to swim in them. If you have the patience, he's overwhelming.
