Piston rings aren't required for many small motors
A motor does not necessarily need piston rings to obtain proper compression as anyone familiar with rc model aircraft can testify. Proper fitting of correct materials such as ABC nitro motors (aluminum, brass and chrome) require no rings and operate at a wide range of rpm with a power to weight ratio far beyond most motors.
