A Valuable Resource of Collected Material on BSA's Singles
"BSA Singles Gold Portfolio 1964-1974" is a book published by Brooklands Books of Surrey, UK; a publisher well known for collecting material from magazines on automotive or motorcycling topics and compiling the information into a sound resource for the enthusiast. The BSA Singles title follows the traditional format long established by Brooklands Books by offering a wide array of contemporary magazine articles from sources such as Cycle, Cycle World, Two Wheels, Classic Bike, and many more, reprinted in black and white with the only color photos appearing on the front and rear covers of the book. This title includes contemporary road tests dating from 1964, and continuing along to follow the evolution of BSA's singles through to the last days of the company. What I really enjoyed with this book was that the publisher included articles such as "Tuning for Speed-C15" from a January 1966 issue of Motorcycle Mechanics that offers great insight into the way professional engines were being prepared for race and street performance at the time these bikes were relatively new.I also enjoyed the articles that were included from Classic Bike and British Bike Magazine, the latter taken from a 1990 issue of that publication. These articles offer valuable insight to the collector as to what to look out for and what to think about when considering a BSA one lunger for purchase.Being more of a street bike rider, I wasn't as interested in the articles on the MX and Scrambles bikes, of which the book in all is a 50/50 blend of street bike and off road. I would have rather seen two separate and smaller titles done on each. Still, this is not a drawback, as the book is extremely valuable as a reference resource to both types of rider.I thoroughly enjoyed this title and feel it would make a wonderful addition to any classic British bike enthusiast's book shelf.
