Far from comfy but does the job
It's hard to cope with the fall out, so to speak, of incontinence, urinary or faecal. And it's one of the taboos in polite conversation. But when you're a daughter-carer you've got to cope with whatever's - kind of! - thrown at you, well, whatever life throws at you. My mum is increasingly incontinental , urinary and faecal. Both cause her excruciating embarrassment - in fact it goes deeper than that; it undermines her very sense of self and worth. It's horrible to see your loved one decline in such a manner. It's even harder to get help from those who understand such things. Two NHS pleas for help from the incontinence service, signed off by GPs, have failed. Fact is you're doubly incontinent you're less likely to go out doors , venture further than your loo or comfort zone. It's crucial to get pads which will catch the worst of it and ideally most of it / And these do. They may not look graceful , or stick into place easily, and they do feel bulky on, particularly for women, especially older women , but if you put aside pride they are a step in the right direction. The problem is they are so big you need substantial undies to hold them in place (I'd recommend Tena Fix pants which are really stretchy and washable, bit of trial and error getting the right size because you need them to hold the pads in place and reduce leakage but not so tight that you feel squidged or uncomfortable). Don't be afraid to ask a loved one to help - because it's such a learning curve. It's also easier to remove the specialist pants (and other brands are available) because we've found ourselves having to cut under in order to 'escape' from filled pads without spillage or further discomfort and embarrassment if assisted. I'm sorry if this is so graphic but It's all about acceptance and living with a condition - particularly if old age removes any chance of surgical intervention. Don't forget to check YouTube videos for info too. On our third bid for NHS specialist support it was one of these pads which made the point for us - and we still use the Attends for faecal incontinence at our own expense. On the very day my mum tearfully told me to throw the "horrible things" away she had two bouts of really severe incontinence - and it was just days after another incident while showering , again with assistance from me, which horrified both of us. I feel glad I ordered these, initially as a standby and now a go-to pad when others, which tend to be designed for urinary incontinence, fail. I also feel glad I called the community nursing team today and asked, yet again, for help; it's a big improvement on how I started my day, sat in the garden, crying at how overwhelming home nursing care is proving. Good luck to others reading this. You're not alone. It just feels that way at times.
