Q: Can I use as a receiver using my passive Bose 161 speakers as external speakers?

Yes it can with passive speakers it is a good amplifier for the price. I use it to power two passive Dolby height speakers on my 9.2 Dolby Atmos Denon AV Reciever.

Q: Does this need a pre-amp, or can it be connected to a DAC?

I've got this connected to a Project Pre Box S2 DAC which is connected to my PCs. This works well for me.

TPA3116 - only 19V power supply, so less than 50w into 6 ohm. - and no tone control. TB10A probably better, esp if you need tone control. The 24v power supply gives more ability to turn up the bass. Allan Hendry. MonoPulse.
