The Dick Cavett Show - John Lennon & Yoko Ono

The Humiliation of Lennon
As one watches this DVD it becomes clear that John and Yoko are nervous as they chain-smoke their way throughout the interview. John is subserviant to Yoko and discusses only what is suggested by Yoko. He faintly responds to Dick who tries to kept a levity going between them all. There is definitely chemistry of being liked betwee John and Dick, however John just can't sit still. It bothered me, too, when John put out a cry to try to find Yoko's daughter, who for some probably valid reason had been taken on the run with her father and step-mother to keep her away from Yoko, all-the-while John is having absolutely no relationship with his son Julian from his first marriage. Way out of whack, Mr. Lennon. John seemed very thin and drugged out and Yoko was strategically placed to sit in the center and indeed became the center of attention because of this throughout the interview. Later, even John gave Yoko center stage for a God-awful screaming banchee song. What John ever saw in Yoko baffles most of us!

The Dick Cavett Show - John Lennon & Yoko Ono
I have been a fan of John Lennon's since I was 13. I love his off hand remarks and complete honesty. This is Lennon at his best. Although the interview starts off a little "stiff", it easily escalates to a comfortable reparte between Lennon and Cavett. Cavett, ever the consumate host, always included Yoko in his questions and remarks. I felt that John was open and comfortable and shared himself with the audience completely. There is a question and answer section where John answers questions from the audience. He gets so caught up in his exchange with one audience member that it takes Cavett to steer John in a different direction. The passion that Lennon is known for shines through at that moment. If you love John Lennon...you will love seeing this fabulous interview.San Diego, CA

Imagine John Lennon again
This DVD is a welcome addition to any film library as the two discs, not only have historical value in capturing John's legal problems and government persecution, but show how charming, witty, and passionate John was. After normal opening jitters for Lennon and Cavett, they settle down into a great and animated conversation. Yoko comes off quite well, hardly the evil woman Beattle fans at the time made her out to be. It is quite clear that John and Yoko were devoted to each other. A couple of tunes are played on second disc and excerpts are also shown from some of John and Yoko's films. It was John's first interview after the Beatles broke up and was insightful and entertaining. There are also interviews with Stan Freeberg and Shirley MaClaine, among others, that are lively and fun as well.

An absolute treasure!
I wish I waited a few months for the price to drop on this dvd set. $6.99 is a STEAL! Excellent footage of John & Yoko with the great Dick Cavett. Totally unabashed, without pretense, completely open, John's even a bit of a dick... but hey, it's John Lennon! Yoko needs a bra, but that's cool too. It was the '70's, people! Even the extra bits with the other guests are great. Shirley MacLaine's an adorable nutjob and the dude talking about spontaneous natural phenomena is a highlight. Lennon lovers, do not miss this set! If you can, check out the dvd with George Harrison. He plugs Florida orange juice. It's little things like that that make these dvd's endearing.

Oh Yoko!
Okay 1971 was a nice year. [I] find that my only HAPPINESS is with the shy Yoko Ono and her very talented husband John. This dvd is a time capsule for all us babyboomers --- a definite MUST before we meet our Maker. Only drawback is that (...) Cavett has yet to have a decent hairdo since 1971 (even now i don't think he knows what to do with his hair)!.... but dear buyer --- get this dvd. Hare Krsna. War is over (if you want it!)

geniune, sincere, real
This interview with Dick Cavett is one of the best of Lennon and Yoko. They are unguarded, totally intelligent, quick, and positively wise in their analysis of rock, their lives, and world events. This interview shows them completely as they were: straight-shooters with very little bull. You can see how John and Yoko are so together with each other and how Yoko is so much better, intelligent, and caring than her frequent portrayal as a controller and puppeteer of John. A must for any Lennon and Yoko fan.

Dissappointing
Even though I'm a big Beatles and Lennon fan I found this to be a letdown. Especially after all the 5 stars it got from people here. I found myself squirming at times as John is so wound up. He is very anxious and the constant lighting up of ciggies puts me off. He looks to be wired and coked up to me. Cavett at times, even though he tries to look calm and in control, is clearly uncomfortable. Yoko Ono is always asking questions through John like a little girl. On the second appearance The Elephants Memory Band play the tepid "Woman is the nigger" and a Yoko song which is a complete waste of time. Ringo on the Donahue show (1995) is a way better interview. Only when Cavet allows the audience to throw questions at John does it liven up. Clearly the best part. Unfortunately its not long enough.
