Q: where is the quick release?

There is no quick release. There is a ratchet lever that must be held open until the belt is completely pulled free. Ok for just loosing but still takes two hands to remove.

Q: For a 42” waist which is better the 36-42 or the 42-48?

My response would be the latter. You can always cut more off if needed but if it starts out too small to begin with 🤷🏻♂️

Q: Does the buckle have any metal at all? I am allergic to nickel and need something that is preferably entirely metal free.

ALL the buckles I've ever seen are metal, but they are almost surely all die-cast, which means their primary metal element is an aluminum alloy, and I doubt it contains any nickel. However, some chrome-plating processes use nickel as an underlying plating prior to the chrome. Those processes are expensive, however, so I doubt there is any nickel in the buckle, but there is METAL.

Q: My waist is 40in which one would you recommend me?

42" - 48" just to be safe! You can always cut the end that goes into the buckle to get the fit you need. I have a 39" waist and the 36" - 42" left me with about 3" extra when I cinch up the belt. The buckle has a clasp that you open, slide the non-tapered end of the belt into and close. You can always just cut off what you don't need!
