This is Not a Maths Book: A Smart Art Activity Book

I LOVE this book
I am a math tutor who works with homeschoolers from 9 to 18 years old. I ordered this book as I browsed one day and am completely thrilled by it. Everything about it is inviting for students aged 9-14(?): The paper it it printed on has a very pleasant texture, almost like thick rice paper; every page has colorful pictures and text arranged in an energetic (but not chaotic) way; there is something for the student to do with colored pencils, or compass, or sissors, or rulers, or graph paper on every page in service of interesting math ideas. The ideas themselves are ones typically found in texts or other books to open up the math world beyond computation for students but which rarely engage students in any real way. This book not only engages the student with the ideas but promotes creativity in the use of them. This is certainly NOT another math book, and I am going to buy additional copies for my grandchildren as well as some of my students. What a great find!

Keep in mind....
I bought this product used, so I shouldn’t have been too surprised to learn that there was writing from the previous owner on a couple of the pages, but besides that it’s an amazing book that makes learning so much fun!

Interesting & fun way to combine Math & Art
This book is definitely different than most other math books. It uniquely combines art & math using games and art projects to illustrate math concepts. We used this in combination with Vihart (youtube) videos ~ which move quickly, but are interesting, even for math students who are less interested in math. It makes math fun and practical in a real-life way.

Fantastic book for math teachers
Fantastic book for math teachers. Great to build creativity in math. I am curious to know the sequel and how it is because this book includes material I am already familiar with.

An artistic view of math...helping our brains see patterns
This little book has been a great addition to our math units. It combines the perception of math in an artistic way which is a good reinforcement providing the patterns and rhythms of math for which our brains seek to establish...organization of thought and perception.

Pretty neat book
Pretty neat book. A little old for my 6 year old math whiz but with a little help, she loves it.

Fun book!
My 8 year old son really enjoys this book, and actually asks me if he can work on his "math book." Anything that gets a kid interested in doing math is great, in my opinion!

Art and Math
I have used this book with students grades 4 to 10 and they all love it when I bring out this book. The projects are intriguing and have initiated many interesting mathematical conversations. It is a nice break to the regular math class.

Fabulous for the reluctant artist who likes maths
I think this book is intended for kids who like art but are not keen on maths, as a way of shoeing that maths can be fun and beautiful. The opposite it true of my son (age 9) who loves maths but is reluctant to take part in art activities and lacks confidence with art techniques. He was thrilled with this book and amazed by the beautiful patterns we've made using maths equipment. We have sat together for an hour at a time doing the activities side by side and its been lovely, calm and also good for kids who like mindfulness activities. Its useful to have some extra squared paper, not a requirement but we can produce a lot more pictures and patterns that way and we've also been extending the activities by experimenting our own ideas on squared paper once we've done an activity in the book. There are pages of squared and triangular printed sheets at the back of the book but not many so I'd suggest photocopying them or buying some extra. You'll also need a pair of compasses and a protractor.Really pleased with this.Would suit a wide range of ages from about 7 ish to adult (ability to use a pair of compasses and a ruler quite well to get the right result).

How maths works in nature
This is a brilliant book which can attract different users. Firstly it's not just for kids. Adults and teens might find the exercises incredibly enjoyable and fun too!Although maths is not evident on the exercises through numbers and formulae, it surely prepares the mind to observe the world through maths eyes.My son, who was never keen on either maths or art at school definitely enjoys it.Because the book is not aimed at a specific age, some exercises might be a bit difficult for some children, but because this is real life maths they might still enjoy the activities with a little adult help.

The beauty of numbers
I love this book. The puzzles and challenges are maths based, but it doesn't feel like it. My 9 year old daughter (who claims to hate maths) just feels like she is creating something beautiful, interesting and fun. She finds the challenges quite satisfying and she is beginning to gain an understanding of how beautiful numbers can be. This is a great resource for kids who don't usually want to engage with maths.

Gift for my 8 year old son - totally original ...
Gift for my 8 year old son - totally original idea, you need some basic tools (compass and pencil etc) but has kept him entertained for ages - and he keeps coming back to it. Definitely 8-10 year old age range.

Excellent!
A fantastic book! I've used this in school with KS2 children, as well as with my own children at home. The activities are fun and enjoyable, presented in a colourful, attractive way. The book is great quality too, printed on lovely-textured paper, making it inviting to use. Great value for money.
