Guitars: A Celebration of Pure Mojo

Excellent, unusual, comprehensive, strange and NOT a calendar!!!!
This is a review of the BOOK and not the associated calendar. I have absolutely no idea why reviews for these separate products appear for both! Amazon must have mucked up the link codes. So ... here's my opinion and review of THE BOOK:-I have several books detailing the history and/or development of both acoustic and electric guitars. This 'little' book is quite different and even though it covers a lot of the same ground, it does so in a unique way. It's how it does this that makes it so appealing. I'll try to explain what I mean:For a start, it's an unusual format. It's more like a small, heavy brick measuring 15cm long by 10 cm wide by 2.5cm thick. There is no index but there is a 2-page Contents section. This is very much a book to help you explore some unusual ways of thinking about guitars.Electric and acoustic instruments appear in what might seem to be very haphazard ways, but there ARE section headings within which this apparent mayhem is given a subtley disguised level of logical organisation. The section and topic headings that you'll encounter are not what you might expect. To summarise the Contents pages ....THE 6-STRING SPELL --- exploring the types and levels of obsession that can be found amongst the guitar-loving community)THAT TONE --- what goes to make guitars sound like they do?LOUDER! --- How guitars of all varieties 'sound their voice'.AMERICAN ICONS --- 23 guitars that changed musical history.UPTOWN, LONG-HAIRED AND OVER THE TOP --- The classical and jazz guitarPLUGGED IN --- Evolution and development of the electric guitar and associated musical forms.THE CIRCLE TURNS --- The new golden age of guitar development and popularity.----------------------------------------------------------------------------These breaks with convention have an odd effect in that it quickly becomes a very exciting little 'brick' to open at random or work through section-by-section, often without having much idea what will turn up next or where particular mini-themes will lead you.If you want a serious, structured, historical exploration of the guitar in all its many forms throughout recent years, decades or centuries, then this book won't fulfil strict academic needs, but it WILL open up new perspectives for such a study. If you want a book to excite and intrigue you, then I strongly advise you to put it in your basket right now.If you're already one of those guitar obsessives that I already referred to, then you've probably already got this book and are about to add your own review. The book is very well-titled. It really is a 'celebration' rather than a potted or adacemic study. I highly recommend it.

Lovely book, though small so hard to read for older people
I only had a quick look as was wrapping it for a gift, but it's a splendid book. Excellent photos and lots of interesting content, presented in an engaging manner. I think my young nephew will be inspired by some of the weird and wonderful characters the book correlates with various guitars. There are dozens of guitars from all eras, acoustic and electric.Only downside is the the small size, which means small font and not easy to read for older people or others without pin-sharp eyesight.

A great little reference book
Super illustrations, informative and value for money. What else can you ask from a reference book, loved by the recipient.

Guitars: A Celebration of Pure Mojo
What could be better than a pocket-sized book about someone's favourite instrument? The pictures and info in the book are just what the guitarist wanted as a dip in and out of read

Lovely little informative and attractive book
Beautifully written and informative book. The slightly strange postcard shaped format doesn't help particularly as some of the lovely guitar photos are lost in the central binding.

Estado regulat

Guitars - A Celebration of Pure Mojo
I purchased this pure mojo book on pure intuition (nice title). It turned out to be a great book full of incredible guitar photos and wide ranging information about all things guitar: its history, constuction, genres, famous guitars, unusual guitars, leading players and makers plus more. I own many guitar books and magazines and still have learned tons of new stuff from this book. The only thing I don't like that much is the odd dimensions. It reminds me of one of those "animation" booklets where you flip the pages fast to make a moving image appear, but bigger (and a lot fatter). Well worth the money.
