Q: Can the garage door opener still work?

Yes the opener will work. Magic mesh mounted on outside frame of door. Sometimes the magnets get caught on garage door(if metal) when opening.I wont be purchasing another garage door magic mesh.I dont believe that the one I installed 1 month ago will make it to September.

Q: Can a car go through it or only people sized?

Only people. A car might snag and rip it down.
