A Civil War Curio Shop
"And I found this item while rummaging through ...", or so it would seem the author says as he blows the dust off another factual artifact on history's shelf. Most likely this little curiosity shop of Civil War arcania would be discovered by readers who are well traveled down the main arteries of the conflict's documentation and now wish to travel a curiosity road less taken. The table of contents is like labeled shelves in a curio cabinet. Choose any shelf such as "Strange New Weapons", "Clergymen Fought Like Hell", or "Civil War Critters" and enjoy the intriguing facts thus displayed. How about "Silent Battles defy Explanation"? Here the author recounts the oft reported battlefield experience of individuals being near the struggle but not hearing it, while others miles away could; seeing the flash of gunfire but not hearing the shot. Your curiosity peaked? Try "From The Sublime to the Ridiculous", but you get the point. This book is chalk full of interesting tidbits in bite size and easily digestible form. One you start into this book, you may well have a sublime experience; you certainly won't feel ridiculous for having pursued your "Civil War Curiosities".

Book was a little yellowed
I thought that the print would be better quality but it looks like a good book though. I love reading about trivia, history and curiosities.

Civil War Oddities
Have recently gotten into reading about the Civil War and thought I would give this one a try. It was pretty interesting but I thought it would have more longer stories about the war curiosities and oddities. On the contrary, it has chapters about certain topics, example "Strange Weapons of the War", and within that chapter there might be 25 to 40 short paragraphs about different types of guns, cannons, or bayonetes that never made an impact on the outcome of the war. While these short paragraphs are interesting, there isn't much substance to them - just short snippets of information. That said, they are interesting but guess I was wanting a little more depth to the stories. I would recommend you give it a try - you might like it...

Interesting anecdotes throughout. This was a gift to a Civil War buff that already knows EVERYTHING about the Civil War so it's not easy finding one more thing about it for this person. Yet they said they enjoyed the anecdotes and they're not the kind of person who would just say whatever I wanted to hear (my husband!!). So I consider it a good find to add to the collection. Arrived promptly.

paperback book
This book appeared very interesting. I bought it for my brother in law...he is a civil war buff. It is a great read and it shipped in a timely fashion, however the book was bent a little in the left corner...I suggest better packing methods next time. I believe it was in a paper bubble wrap...it was not well enough protected. Maybe a box cover of some kind next time.

The things we would have never learned about the Civil War
Am a Civil War buff, had the pleasure of visiting Southern Mansions when we traveled by Steamboatdown the Mississippi. The mansions were beautiful to the owners but represented hard work by slave laborers. My great grandfather and his wife were part of the Underground Railroad near Cincinnati, Ohio. Friend haswritten "The Longest Raid of the Civil War" (Les Horwitz) and included the story of my great grandparentswhere CSA General John Hunt Morgan showed up for breakfast during the raid in the north. What a terrible time for our nation.
