God's Favorite Customer [USA Import] Review: deep, in a good way - Cheeses Josh, whenya gonna remember to let me post-production pre-release polish this stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love you man and love this album but the rush to release is apparent in the inconsistency of the final product. Go on, bung it on the big monitors and turn it up. See what I mean? Most of the time it sounds just awesome but sometimes ... Review: Self destruction viewed from the outside - Tillman takes a view of himself from the outside, as often before, describes himself in 3rd person. The result is tragi-comical as always. Besides his pure comedy album, this is his best work so far

God Help Him
He gained the world but lost his soul, FJM's Josh Tillman seems on the brink of suicide. After the playful exuberance of Pure Comedy, Tillman has retreated to himself and its not a pretty place. This being art, it has some great moments and decent tunes. But its as uplifting as Oxycontin.Outward facing, Tillman is a handsome, talented, articulate performer with flashes of genuine inspiration and genius. Inwardly, he is an emotional train wreck. The songs are downbeat, almost all Elton Johnish piano based tunes, sometimes with little orchestration, other times with elaborately over-produced kitchen sink style. Fortunately, Tillman remains a unique songwriter, even if his own life is overexposed here. I like Mr. Tillman a lot, very paranoid little number. Other standouts are the title track, Please Don't Die and The Songwriter. The last one imagines a role reversal with his wife, and it is very clever and revealing. So it may be maudlin and self punishing, but it is just about as compelling as a traffic accident with Tillman as road kill. I doubt the squashed hedgehog would be able to write an album this good after being run over, but clearly. Tillman can. Next time, Josh, get a little happier before you go into the studio.

This is the best album I've heard this year!
Every track is memorable and all the bloated fill of pure comedy has thankfully gone with John returning to the style of his earlier Fear Fun and Honeybear albums. A beautiful yet melancholy collection of songs to lose yourself in over and over again. Great.

Thanking Frank Sinatra...
I love this record. One of the best I heard in 2018. Very personal and completely different from Pure Comedy. Great voice... maybe this is the reason why in the booklet he thanks Frank Sinatra! 😉

His best yet
This is another album that confirms the old adage that depression and downbeat mood makes for beautiful art. Father John Misty brings his alternative country to another level, The bummed lyrics aside (a bit), the music is colourful, blending unusually inventional, even catchy melodies with arrangements full of interesting ideas. Impressive at first listen and at the same time a grower, it indeed can stand its ground against such masterpieces as "Sea Change" by Beck or "Where Are You" and "Only The Lonely" by Frank Sinatra. No song particularly stands out; the album sounds best as a cohesive collection and sequence. No wonder it appeared as a banner on Spotify service a week after the release. Talk about educating the young on how to listen to music really.

I love this album. I’ve been streaming it on Apple Music since it came out. I got the cassette mostly to take advantage of the opportunity to add one of 2018’s best records to my rapidly growing cassette collection. The purple cassette shell is absolutely beautiful. However, I do think the sound quality takes a hit with the cassette, the tape seems to be thinner than a lot of the older tapes I have and that has an effect on the music
