Has anyone ever used this product on an exterior painted surface? Does it stick to the paint? Does it yellow over time?

Kate, I've used on outdoor things such as gnomes, large metal butterflies over the last 8-9 months without any yellowing. It does stick to the paint. Hope this helps.

Can this be used on metal to protect it from sun and rain?

yes, you can use this for metal but I found a better product for outdoor protection. It is Modern Masters Master Clear Supreme. You will have to redo the Varathane every year as the sun will wear it down.

I did a white solid stain on an oak dining room set---------would this be good for that?

Probably but I dont think I would use a spray on dining table

The can directions don't mention spraying this product but rather suggest brushing it on. However, being a water-based product, I see no reason why it couldn't be thinned to the proper viscosity and sprayed.
