There is always room for one more on mother's lap!
I liked this book immensely. As a parent educator, I would recommend it to parents who have had a second child and are dealing with the first born's adjustment and possible jealousy. It was a lovely narrative to air a first born's worry that the second born might usurp his or her place. Mother solves this beautifully by offering her lap to both children!

Beautiful illustrations
This is a lovely story for children with little brothers or sisters as it shows that their mother has enough love for all of them. The illustrations are beautiful.

Sweet book but it didn't grip my daughters interest
Old fashioned. Short and to the point. Sweet book but it didn't grip my daughters interest.

I loved it but my son was bored
Beautifully illustrated but it didn't hold my 3 year old's attention unlike some of the other "baby is coming" books.

Heartwarming and Simple
I bought this book for my toddler son to try and prepare him for his impending sibling! It is sweet, simple and he loves it. I was surprised to find out how long ago it was published- it feels very fresh and the message, about sharing love, is as relevant as ever. My son especially likes the the repetition of 'back and forth, back and forth they rocked.'Highly recommended!

Perfect gift for siblings of new baby
This is such a lovely little story about a mother's reassurance to the older brother that she has plenty of love for both him and the new baby. The pictures are beautiful. I ordered the board book. I previously owned the paperback, which I preferred as it is larger.

This story is about a mother's love. The characters are Inuit.
This is a wonderful book to read to an individual preschool child or a group. It has beautiful, colourful illustrations, and depicts positive values of love and inclusiveness with a minimum of words.

Couldn't have asked for a better book
This is a fantastic book, and I'm so thrilled with our purchase. While hunting for a "new sibling" book, the last thing I wanted was a book that outwardly instilled any fear--e.g., "the new baby's gonna take all your toys." Frankly, I also didn't want a book that had any sort of direct message, such as "you're going to feel jealous sometimes." I felt it was important to take a subtler approach, on the theory that I'd trust my child to read between the lines.Well, this book is exactly what I was looking for. It's an absolute gem. It goes through a scene where a young boy wants to sit on his mother's lap, but keeps finding toys, loveys, blankets, etc. to bring onto his mother's lap with him (so, mother's lap slowly becomes more and more overloaded). The final scene shows a baby sibling wanting to join on the lap as well. The older boy doesn't think the baby will fit, but the mother assures him that there is always room on her lap. And, in the end, everyone (the two kids) and everything (the various toys, etc.) are able to fit. Most importantly, my child LOVES it so much, and it's the only book about which my child has said "I really love this book." I have bought many other books on this subject, both for myself and for friends, but I've now found the ONLY book on this subject that I will buy in the future to gift to others.Highly, highly recommended book.

A great "big brother" book for a child in a two-mommy household (or anyone else)!
I bought this book as a gift for a 2.5 year-old child who has two mommies and was expecting a little sister. I was having trouble finding a "big brother" book that did not include a daddy character, but this book worked perfectly. (It doesn't actually depict a two-mommy household -- the father just isn't depicted in the pictures or text.) I checked out the book when it arrived, and it seemed like a sweet story. According to the child's mother, he loved the book and asked for it to be read again and again. I think this book would be a great purchase for anyone, but it also works for children of mom(s)-only families (same-sex parents, single mom).

Teaching and entertaining when preparing child for baby #2
Bought this book to prep toddler for baby #2. She thought the book was soooo silly and yet still took away a heartwarming message. The fact that she laghed at each page was a bonus compare to other books where it’s just about teaching about a new baby.

Great book but condition sub par
We love this book and gift it often to new parents welcoming kid #2. However this copy we got from Amazon Services arrived in heavily scratched condition. Last time we ordered it, there was a cut on the cover, I thought it was a one time fluke but after seeing the condition of this book, I would recommend a different seller.

I love this Eskimo story
I love this Eskimo story....but the original illustrations were exquisite and made the story. Unfortunately, I could not obtain an original copy that was affordable as a gift.

Beautiful, Tender, Simple Story
A cousin sent this (boardbook form) to us for our 1-yr boy, and he loves it! The story reads quickly and simply, and the illustrations are just beautiful. I've always rocked my son to sleep (despite what modern books say to do) as it's our bonding time. The tenderness of the story is timeless. I hadn't thought of this book as preparing for a younger sibilng (as other reviews stated), but rather a statement about a mother's neverending love. To add to its charm (for me), our boardbook has a corner chewed off, as it was owned by my cousin's kids, who also loved the story. I'm buying a bunch of these for shower/baby gifts, it's such a lovely story.

Good addition to brother/sister books
The message is sweet - that mother always has room on her lap for all her babies. I like having it in addition to the other new brother books we got, because those touch on additional things/situations. My 2 year old boy does ask for the "mother" book - and really enjoys it. We also think that the other big brother books we have have helped the transition too, because those show other situations. This one though is more subtle and just a sweet story that your child can enjoy past the new brother/sister stage. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Read to brothers!!
My younger son's favorite book when he was a toddler! I had actually purchased it to read to his older brother when I got pregnant the second time. I would use replace the characters' names with theirs when I read it, and my youngest would get excited when "he" was about to make his appearance. Both of them would race to my lap at the right moment in the story. ^.^My sons are now tweens, but this book is a memento, it will always stay in our home.

Great book for my 20-month-old
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, but the first time I read it I cried (did I mention I'm pregnant). My 20-month-old son makes me read it to him every day and he likes to point out the dolly, boat and especially the puppy. He is learning something from the book, because now when my 80 lb. black lab sits on my lap Nathan comes running over, shouts "Michael too!" and climbs on board. Of course, there isn't literally always room on mother's lap! This is a great book for expecting moms with kids toddler-aged and up!

A treasure -- definitely a must-have before new sibling arrival
I purchased this book based on the glowing reviews, but I had my doubts about whether or not my rambunctious 2.5-year-old would be interested. I had nothing to worry about -- my son could not love this book more, and neither could I. It is a treasure for us to enjoy together. It helps us talk about love in a way that he can understand. What a rare gift! The pictures are understated and gorgeous. They tell a story my son can understand. I love reading this book with him and asking him what's happening in each picture and what could happen next. "Puppy's awake! Puppy is watching! Puppy wants to rock!" Etc. He just gets it.I'm currently expecting my second child and found this book while looking for big brother/new baby titles. In terms of preparing my son for the upcoming emotional reality of being one of two kids, I feel like this book is among the best I purchased. With no new baby yet, there's still no telling how my son will react or what we'll learn has been useful preparation. But I can't imagine better preparation than the message in this book, communicated in a way my son understands.

Wonderful book
We bought a couple different books to get our 2 year old son ready for his baby sister. This one is magnificent at reassuring him that there is always room on mommy's/daddy's lap and nothing will ever change that. My son loves the book and wants to read it every night before bed either before or after reading "you're getting a baby sister".
