English subtitles were good
Was a bit worried because the description didn't mention subtitles but took a chance anyway and it did come with English subtitles. Very interesting to see this early version of Ripley. And nice that it was a watchable length. Other versions are unnecessarily long. Great cast.

A fine film with great extras!
The film has been beautifully restored, you would never think it 55 years old. I am a great fan of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley books, and "Plein Soleil" is a fine version of "The Talented Mr Ripley". Where it most diverges from the book is right at the end. Perhaps director Clement was not allowed to let Ripley get away with it? I always used to think (before I eventually saw the film at the National FilmTheatre) that Dirk Bogarde was the only actor who could have played Ripley. There are in fact several moments in the film when Delon reminds me of Bogarde. The set up lets you choose which language the film should be played in. I watched it first in English. The American actors are voiced by Brits, which I found a bit strange because I always hear Ripley as American in my head when I read the books. It has subtitles anyway. I changed the set up to French, so getting the actors in their own language but with English subtitles, and I actually prefer that. This disc also contains extremely informative and worthwhile extras. There is an interview with Delon and a programme about Clement. There is also an extra showing some before and after restored scenes. "Plein Soleil" is a film to enjoy repeated watching, so altogether this is one of the best purchases I have made. A big thank you to StudioCanal for their work on this film.

Stunning
Still the best version of Patricia High smiths Mr Ripley. Alain Delon is totally magnetic as the anti hero of this story. The film has been beautifully restored.

Great film - but this is NOT a restored print of it...
DVD Version: This is not a restored print of the film. The first image is a still from the first French DVD Edition of the film that I bought in the year 2000. Notice the vibrant blues, the darker browns of the suitcase. The second image is a still from the DVD purchased here: notice how washed out the image looks, the wall in the background is not blue, but an insipid brown...it's as if the whole thing was filmed with a sepia filter over it.I chose these stills deliberately because in the Special Features on the DVD, they show you a comparison of before the cleaned it up, and after they cleaned it up: this was one of the scenes they use to illustrate the enhancements. Enhancements that are visible in that Special Feature only, because the film itself does not look like the alleged restored version. Ironically, the version on my French DVD from the year 2000 looks what the restored version should have been.StudioCanal should hang their heads in shame at this. Either something went wrong and the unrestored version of the film was used for the main feature, or they're cynically advertising it as restored when in fact it's not.The film would get five stars. This edition does not.

Good Version
This is a much better adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel than the Hollywood version featuring Matt Damon. But, really, better than any film is the book 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' itself.

Better than Ripley
A much better and interesting story and more engrossing and believable than The Talented Mr Ripley with a surprising fantastic twist at the end! I have watched it 3 times already
