mixed quality, duplicates, difficult to ID some stones
The calendar I received contained a mix of stones that included duplicates as well as small and low quality specimens. Sizes varied from 0.5 inch to greater than 1 inch. Lowlights: The turquoise is a dyed stone (possibly howlite), the tiger's eye has no chatoyancy (cat's eye effect), and there is a piece of raw pink glass with sharp edges, which is not safe for children to handle. That being said, there were several nice specimens in this advent calendar - including the duplicates. However, the product listing is misleading because it claims to provide one each of 24 types of stones. The rough labradorite I received exhibits a labradorescence on many of its faces, including a patch of pink. In contrast, the moonstone (which may instead be white labradorite) has one tiny spot with a blue shimmer (schiller) effect - but parts of the moonstone glow purple under longwave UV light, which is cool. The pink glass glows yellowish-green under 365nm UV light; the hue and weak fluorescence suggest it may be manganese glass, but my knowledge in this area is limited. The fluorite specimen is dark purple like amethyst, but it glows blue under 365nm UV light. The chart provides metaphysical descriptions of the stones, so it was not helpful for identification. The chart seems to have incorrect pictures for some stones: for example, sunstone is orange (not mottled yellow and gray) and strawberry quartz is red/maroon (not green). I did not receive garnet or a “phantom stone”, which I presume is supposed to refer to phantom quartz. The ‘"citrine” is a milky/cloudy quartz with a pale yellow tint. Please note: I applied mineral oil to nearly all the stones in the photos. This generally enhances their appearance, especially for rough stones like labradorite and sunstone. In my experience, it rarely improves the appearance of tiger's eye (i.e., does not darken or hide chips and cracks).I don't think this advent calendar is suitable for children due to the sharp glass specimen as well as the unpredictable contents (duplicates in place of other stones). If it is on a deep discount, then it might provide some amusement for adults. But it doesn't seem like a good value for the list price ($17.99 at the time of my order).
