Looks a little intimidating to new users, but works well!
I was aware that these gauges existed, but never learned how to use one at the studio where I first took classes. We used calipers for measuring diameters and heights, and I never thought that I was missing out on anything by using this method. When I recently made my own home studio, I started gathering all sorts of tools that I was already familiar with, and then I saw a video of someone using one of these gauges and decided to give this one a whirl.Like the other reviewer, I, too, have a Shimpo VL Lite wheel, and the gauge fits well. Upon first glance, when it arrived, I felt a momentary sense of, "Oh no," at the various pieces needing assembly. However, it's really not tricky at all, and I had it put together quickly. One just needs to take some care when handling or when throwing with your hands close to the blades.I guess I could say it's one of those things I didn't know I needed in my life — until I got it. I still use my calipers, too, but it's handy to have another tool on hand for precision.

An okay option, but could be better
There's better gauges for the price out there, but this one is workable. I'm not a huge fan of having it clamped to the splash pan around the wheel, as that isn't the most secure of spots on most wheels. More so, the clamp size is small enough that it's fiddly to get it around the lip of the pan. It's kind of a dumb design. There are a couple wheels in my studio that have pans this simply wouldn't fit on.It's also not great that it uses wing nuts to adjust -- you need them tight to keep things from moving at all, and with wet, slip-covered hands, that is hard to do. I've never seen one not have wood or nylon knobs.I don't think I'd buy this to use as-is. I think I'll end up replacing the wing nuts with proper knobs and likely bolt the riser to a weighted base like most throwing gauges. Basically I'll use the arms and make my own, I guess. That'll make this solution a lot more expensive than most well-designed ones, and there are ones readily available with far better clamp designs that will fit properly on normal pans.

Design is awkward. Cumbersome to use.
The way this connects, adjusts, etcetera, is awkward and cumbersome. After a few uses, I kind of gave up because of all the fiddling that's necessary. I have other gauges of different designs that will continue to be my go-to.

Easy to put together. Stable on the splash pan.
This is my first time using a gauge. It fits perfectly on my Shimpo VL Lite. I honestly didn't know you could trim with one of these. I always thought you just used it to check the widths of your pots. For that it’s great. The blades are quite sharp and I’m not sure the best way to use them yet. I might try to dull them a tiny bit so they don't snag. Great little addition to the studio. Very happy with this.

All metal construction seems nice at first but...
I have used gages similar to these in the past many time until the ones I had fell and broke. I got these cause i figured, "oh nice, all metal, these should hold up great". Functionally, they work. The real problem is when you are actually using them. Typically, the "blades" are made of a plastic, arent sharp and can easily be folded back... These all metal ones are quite sharp. Most frustrating of all, you can't simply fold back the "blade" without first loosening them... and this of course causes the entire set of gages to move a little. Kind of defeats the reason for having them in the first place. If you leave the wing nut loose, it just flops around and again, isnt very accurate. Most of the gages I have used have a channel that the "blade" sits in so its sturdy but doesnt need to be loosened to fold it back.I tried to use these when throwing 20 sponge holders and ultimately ended up removing them after the first 10 and went back to my calipers and ruler.Would not recommend
