Encouraging Words: A Source Book of Words and Phrases for Dissertation and Report Writers Paperback – June 8, 2012

Having a masters thesis to begin in the near future I have decided to start researching my research. This book gave some great advice on how to get into the right mindset, as well as some specific examples and word choices to turn a general idea into a very specific one. This book is not a step by step "how-to" book, but if you are writing a dissertation you should already be a proficient writer. Instead, this book offers suggestions on ways to improve your writing style in order to present your focus in a clearer manner. For example, instead of writing "one fact that proves this is" the book offers suggestions such as "a variant of this justification" and many other similar suggestions. A great book both as a reference, and as a primer for those preparing for a major written project.

This little book was an invaluable tool in helping me complete my research design. I most appreciated the size and to the point nature of the book. With a massive project to complete, the last thing I needed was another voluminous book to read. The suggested phrases gave me direction, helping me complete a professional design paper. As stated in the book, several of the suggested phrases sparked ideas for alternative variations of wording reflecting my style. Going forward this book will also help with the writing findings for the actual research.

Encouraging Words' primary purpose is to help alleviate writer's block. It is especially good for college students struggling with writer's block on essays. Although this book it targeted primarily at college students, it is good for any English speaker. The reason is that you will almost certainly increase your vocabulary considerably by reading this book.This book is well written and well formatted. That is obviously really important because the quality of the writing is a good scale to measure how much we can trust the writer's words. In this case I trust them entirely. I recommend this book to anybody who is struggling with writer's or who want to increase their vocabulary.

I am a master's student. My professor turned me on to this book. It helps you come up with all kinds of great words and phrases to use in formal writing assignments. For example, instead of this boring sentence: "According to Smith, . . ." how about this: "Smith presented a clear explanation of . . . I love this book!

And a great tool to structure your assignments, not just your phd. Obviously the author of this book wrote these notes during his years studying his phd, and thought others in the same situation would benefit, but really this is great for any uni writer, and probably high school assignments too.This is a well written and inspirational book of report writing organizational phrases, and I highly recommend this book to you if you write reports or assignments. It will help you focus your subject matter better.

It worked for me when I already had several words or sentence structures repeated. The book provided lots of words/phrases to use and made my report looked nicer and professional.

It does my heart well to see the effort that Malinda Hayes has put into this must-have manual on writing reports and dissertations. Students from nursery school to graduate work in college can find the most valuable tips here.It's really a sourcebook to turn to when you are stuck or aren't really stuck but just want to find a better word or phrase than what you first thought of.Hayes provides opportunities also for learning and vocabulary development. That approach should encourage you to become more aware of words that can be used in academic writing and to compile lists of your own sentences, phrases, and new words.

A university lecture recommended this book to me. At first sight I thought nothing special of it as it looked to simple to be of any used. However, after closer examination it has become a necessary tool with my writing to the point that I bought copies for friends and family who are going to or who are at uni. This is a must have book which I use for work and studies.
