Walt Disney's Classic Storybook (Storybook Collection)

"Beautiful, Vintage Artwork, but not exactly what I expected"
This is a collection of Classic Disney Big and Little Golden Books from the 1950's-1960's; featuring the vintage artwork I recalled from my childhood. This edition features big, gilded pages. I discovered, upon delivery, that about every third or fourth page was stuck together. I went through the entire book "unsticking" the pages. This was time-consuming and annoying, but the book seems fine now. I remember a Big Golden Book of "Walt Disney's Mary Poppins" from the late 1960's or very early 1970's that, basically, told the entire story of Disney's movie version. I thought that was the edition that would be reproduced here. I was disappointed to find that what is called "Mary Poppins" here is just a brief, very poorly drawn, episode involving Uncle Albert's hysterical laughing fits and the tea party on the ceiling. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about how magical Mary flies into the Banks household, her Jolly Holiday with Bert and the children, how she helps the household become a family again, etc. Despite my disappoint over "Mary Poppins," the rest of the book is fine; featuring cute stories about Goofy, Chip and Dale, Donald Duck, and one, "Mickey Mouse's Picnic", that features an almost entirely forgotten Disney character; now more of a Disney footnote; called Clarabelle Cow. The storybook reproductions of classic Disney films; "Snow White," "Pinocchio," "Dumbo", "Lady (And The Tramp"), "Bambi", "Cinderella", "Alice In Wonderland", "Peter Pan" and "Sleeping Beauty"; are mostly fine. The artwork for this particular version of "Snow White," is a bit weird and offbeat, but also memorable and charming. The artwork and presentation of "Cinderella," "Alice In Wonderland", "Lady (And The Tramp") and "Peter Pan" is particularly breathtaking and exquisite. This sturdy edition is just fine for children to read by themselves, or for parents to read to their children at bedtime. This edition is a great value for the price. But, for far superior storybook editions of classic Disney films and characters, I highly recommend the 5 Star "Walt Disney's Treasury Of Children's Classics" and "Disney's Princess Treasury"; which have broader, adult appeal as well.

An incredible deal
This book is one of Amazon's biggest bargains. It's a collection of 18 classic Disney short stories, illustrated with restored artwork from 1950s and '60s Little Golden Books and printed on quality gloss paper -- which has silver gilded edges like that of a fine photo album. You'd think it would cost about four times as much. Its stories come from nine Disney movies and nine Disney cartoons. The movie narratives are:* "Sleeping Beauty"* "Lady" (from "Lady and the Tramp"* "Mary Poppins"* "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"* "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party" (from "Alice in Wonderland")* "Pinocchio"* "Dumbo of the Circus" (the story of "Dumbo")* "101 Dalmatians"* "Peter Pan"The cartoon tales are:* "Pedro" (one of the animated shorts in the 1942 film "Saludos Amigos")* "Once Upon A Wintertime" (a short from 1948's "Melody Time")* "Three Little Pigs" (a 1933 Silly Symphonies cartoon)* "The Grasshopper and the Ants" (a 1934 Silly Symphony)* "Johnny Appleseed" (a "Melody Time" animated featurette)* "The Tortoise and the Hare" (a 1935 Silly Symphony)* "Scamp" (the story of Lady and the Tramp's son, the basis of 2001's "Scamp's Adventure")* "Bootle Beetle's Adventure" (from "Bootle Beetle," a 1947 Donald Duck cartoon)* "The Old Mill" (a 1937 Silly Symphony)Each story is 10 to 20 pages, with less words (and larger type) than its original Little Golden Book, but at least one illustration per page. The style of art varies. "The Grasshopper and the Ants" uses muted watercolors. "Three Little Pigs" has some sepia-toned pencil sketches. "Alice in Wonderland" and "Once Upon a Wintertime" feature artist Mary Blair's vibrant use of white. And "Mary Poppins" literally pops off the page, with a vivid rainbow of colors straight from the 1960s.If you buy this book, you'll keep it forever.

The quality is just amazing, beautiful illustrations and high quality
paper, the book is heavy and the overall quality is just amazing for the price, it is excellent, the stores are great and many from the original books I had when I was a child including Cinderella which I have not seen since I was about 10 years old so to have this book with this quality and these memories and price is just staggering. I love all the stories but Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Mickey Mouse's Picnic are my favorite memories and I can't tell you how much joy I have in being able to see them again, my old friends, who gave me so much fun and fantasy in my childhood and now again in my old age. Excellent product, so well made and again such high quality is incredible, especially at this price.

Shame this was discontinued
It's a shame this volume was discontinued--there are some good stories here and it is an excellent value. The illustrations are very nice. The writing is OK, but nothing special. It tends to be rather bland--somewhat more than a condensed description of what happened in a cartoon--but it does the job. The stories themselves are obviously appealing to kids, and our little boy liked most but not all of these stories. He particularly enjoyed some that you might not expect, like "Bootle Beetle's Adventure" and "The Old Mill." You can see video versions of these on YouTube, by the way.

Amazing collection
This collection of classic disney stories with pictures compiled into one heavy silver trimmed book is a favorite of my three year old. She was growing board of her regular board/picture books but doesn't quite have the patience of chapter books yet. This gives her a variety of picture books in one go that she can look through or we can read together. She constantly is asking "Which chapter are we up to now?" as we pull the book out at bedtime. The quality seems nice, its definitely thick and heavy but the pages are very thin so be careful not to tear.

When the book arrived all the pages need separating as they seemed bonded together. The illustrations don't seem the usual Disney standard. My son loves hearing stories from it but I'm not overly impressed with the quality.
