What Night Brings (Working Classics)

Marcie is a hero for all the right reasons!
One of my favorite novels. I love "girlhood stories" and this is a classic. Marcie (Marcía) is a an adventurous kid planning alternatives to her negative family dynamics. Trujillo's writing really conveys the voices of this family (originally from New Mexico, now in the Bay Area). I particularly like the different explorations of both religion and gender. Special cameo appearances by Grandma Flor--the fierce grandma everyone needs!

Well-written and pretty with varying concerns.
This book is an excellent novel to introduce complex and powerful queer latinidad storytelling. I'm unclear if the protagonist character is transgender or just very vaguely queer. The writing style is from a vantage of a young soul whose survival humors, engages, and riles us. I felt that the bold and richly defined characters ebbed in class struggle, sexism, diasporic longing, and racism lent itself to strong personal and internal character development. The ending wasn't what I anticipated so don't expect a sugary close to the plot. This book is powerful and even though the ending wasn't ideal, the themes developed in "What Night Brings" are very relevant to Queer Youth and People of Color today. Trigger warning for domestic and intimate violence.

I love Trujillo's style- the characters are my neighbors and friends
I love Trujillo's style- the characters are my neighbors and friends. The plot is heart wrenching and funny at once, and I couldn't put it down. Will buy and read everything this author publishes!
