Is there a way to cover this? I wanted to use both sides as a sand out without water

Thought of this myself looked for anything that would help but the only thing I could come up with was an elasticated waterproof cover I would have to make myself, using a plastic tablecloth cut to shape. There may be something out there now but I couldn't find it.

Is there enough space in the sand bit to build a sandcastle?

Sorry I've not built it yet but looks like there will be you can use the water side for sand too givs plenty space there

When putting the water tray together, I noticed that there are no pre-drilled holes for the screws to go in. Is this is a mistake in manufacturing?

No this is deliberate on manufacture all step two items just have the indentation you have to drill the screws in yourself
