CHRISTINE - MOVIE

A masterpiece that's as timeless as the demon on wheels
I believe this is quite simply a masterpiece and one of the best films that John Carpenter has made. He didn't make many poor films, even when he wasn't on the best of form, but this ranks up there as one of his most memorable and brings to spectacular life a very poor book.I saw the film long ago unfortunately in a cut form on television late one night, and then I got to see the proper uncut version on Blu-ray years later, and I had very nostalgic memories of it. I have to say, I am not a Stephen King fan, and I made the mistake once of reading the book. The book is slow, way too long and boring. Stephen King himself said once he wasn't very happy with it. Didn't stop him complaining about the film adaption though, even though it is superior in every way and from raking in the dollar signs from the rights. John Carpenter and Stephen King also happen to be friends, so not much in the way of gratitude there either. Anyways, back to the film. (Take care, there may be spoilers!).There are so many memorable sequences and moments, that it is hard to know where to begin. I should start by complimenting a terrific young cast. John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul and Keith Gordon as Arnie Cunningham, the main protagonist are all brilliant. In Keith's case, as Arnie, for someone who begins the film as the geek, the total nerd in high school who always gets picked on and has a hard time, then progresses to become a dangerous rebel type, his journey in the film is quite extraordinary. Keith Gordon is not a bad looking guy and he is made up to look as plain as possible to begin with, then after buying Christine and being slowly seduced by this 50s Plymouth Fury, his transformation into a darker, more confident and even dangerous character is impressive, given the short space of time it occurs in. Even his look is not left to chance. As the film goes on, his look becomes more 50s and it really suits him, the way his soul is being transformed by this deadly Plymouth Fury is totally convincing.Christine's jealousy is also unnerving. The scene at the drive-in when Arnie and Leigh are about to make out, then tricks Arnie into getting out the car, while she does her jealousy bit and tries to kill Leigh. Wow.After the scene where Christine is vandalised is when things really juice up. The chase scenes, where Christine is out to get even with those who trashed her are particularly memorable, and the stuntwork and stunt driving is quite superb, even breath-taking. Note the scene where Christine is chasing Buddy, the head bully and she is on fire, it's like the devil is after him. Most notable though is the scene where Christine "repairs" herself. For years I wondered how it was done, because the scene is absolutely incredible. One more thing that makes this movie stand out, like with most of his others is the music. I don't mean the rock and roll tracks that are playing throughout, which is part of Christine's evil 50s soul, I mean the music score. John Carpenter of course famously composed all the music for his films, joking that he did it himself because he was both cheap and on time, simple as that. The music for this is sensational. Aside from The Fog maybe, oh and of course the amazing music for Assault on Prininct 13, I think this stands out as one of his finest music scores. It really has everything. When I saw Christine back then, it was on video cassette and recorded off television. It's all I had then, but I still liked it. When I saw it recently on Blu-ray, it brought those memories back of watching it, and that was so long ago, decades I mean, I thought I might not be able to watch it without thinking about that, but I did. Christine is a masterpiece of film-making on a tight budget, using imagination and more to the point, it has lasted all this time and is still popular. A lot of the bonus features are great too, featuring deleted scenes and a terrific commentary. If you remember this movie, if you are into suspense thrillers, films about cars or maybe can identify what it's like to be an outcast who falls in love, even if it is with a four-wheeled demon, this comes highly recommended. It will be everything you remember.Be nice to Christine, she's sensitive.

Finally, a high definition release of this fantastic film
I've been hoping for a Blu Ray release for some time having missed the limited edition Twilight run and, finally, it's arrived and at a great price. The text on the case is in German, however the soundtrack and menu options are in English, so a bit of a relief there. If you can hang on a little longer, the US release will doubtless find its way here too.Onto the, region free, Blu Ray itself, I was not disappointed. The beautiful 1958 Plymouth Belvedere has never looked so good, with a pin-sharp picture and wonderful 5.1 soundtrack, which picks out John Carpenter's music and those delightful V8 engine notes particularly well. Collectors will also be delighted to see that all the special features from the Special Edition DVD release, including commentaries, are also included, so you really can't go wrong. In summary then a fantastic, albeit long overdue, general high definition release. Any fans of the film wondering if it's worth upgrading from the DVD edition, I highly recommend you do so.Superb.

really fun film! Much of what Christine does is now ...
really fun film! Much of what Christine does is now science fact rather than fiction (apart from the whole murdering demonic possession thingy) a classic that is just as much fun today, best enjoyed with alcohol.
