Not tool that I really need, but it is a Time saver.
This tool doesn't do anything that you can't do with a ruler and a protractor. However, it is a Big Time Saver to just form the tool to the Contours of your tread and be able to take that out to your cutting station and transfer the dimensions and angles. If you get a small project and your stairs are rectangular, then I would say save your money. However, my stairs turn as they go up. This causes many of the Treads to be odd sizes with angles on both sides. I I'm covering the treads in a laminate flooring and this device saves me a bunch of time. It allows me to place several pieces of the flooring together to form the full size of the tread and then lay this on top and Trace out the shape. Quite a bit quicker than writing down with and angles on a piece of paper and then remeasuring at the cutting station.

Good, but Could Be Better
A good stair tread template will save you lots of time and expensive treads. This will save you time if you use it carefully. Several vendors are selling this under different names so look for the best buy.The quality of the materials and packaging are very good. The length and width will accommodate many residential stairs. While I would like the slider pieces to automatically be perfectly straight when the knobs are tightened, this is a minor personal preference issue.Where you must be careful is handling the template after you have tightened the knobs holding the two straight edges against the walls. Using the manufacturers knobs I could not get the ends so tight they would not move and change the angle. There is just a little bit of wiggle in the straight edges even at the tightest setting. If a wall runs inward to center from the riser, pulling the template straight back risks changing the angle ever so slightly. You need to lift the template up and away from one of the walls and then always handle it carefully so you do not jar either end out of position. I found that some of the issue can be removed by adding a ¼” lock washer and a ¼” flat washer under the knob. It then took more force to move the ends out of position after the knobs were tightened down.

Good Tool, Saves Time
If you're measuring a straight run on a shelf or stair tread, this tool is not necessary. However, if you're measuring a corner piece or a circular stair tread, this tool can save you time and make measuring easier and more accurate. The metal and plastic parts are of high quality and provide the precision you need for accurate measuring. The box it comes in offers an excellent and compact storage option.

Highly Recommended
This helped mark the LVP flooring before cutting to allow for more precise measurements. Even when the tread wasn't perfectly rectangle. The box with foam slots makes a nice case for putting away and reusing. We were able to get a job done quickly and more efficiently.
