The check valve does not stop back flow, so water goes back through the air valve into the ozonator potentially damaging the unit, Yes I tried it both ways and no it does not work.

Product is ok
If you are using these in any frequent application make sure that you have some way of clamping the valves. They fall out on their own. Also the flow is not high on them.
