This does everything I need to simplify and expedite my composting efforts. I love it!
I have been composting for almost 30 years and have tried many different homemade and commercially made composting bins/systems butit has always taken me a year or two to get compost suitable for planting because I never succeeded in getting enough “brown matter” in the mix, since the ratio is supposed to be approximately two parts brown matter to one part kitchen or other green plant matter. My ratio was more like 3/4s kitchen veggie scraps to 1/4 dry/brown leaves and grass clippings. This machine dries my kitchen wastes and chops them into particles that are a bit larger than soil but perfect for mixing in soil and or using as a somewhat fine mulch without any mold! It’s perfect for my gardening needs. It’s very user friendly and can handle items that many if the other composting and or dehydrating machines can, as long as you cut the pieces small enough. I cut my coffee filters, avocado pits, corn cobs and husks into small pieces (approx an inch or two for corn husks, veggie peels, etc and approx 1/2 to 3/3's of an inch for corn cobs-depending on how hard they are- and avocado pits.). I even put the hard stems of large summer and winter squashes cut into 1/2 to 2 inch pieces and it works. The machine comes with a printed instructions manual (Halleluia!) so techno dummies like me can use it. The instructions manual has a list of the things you can and can’t put in as well as the items you can in with special instructions.I love that it has a manual and an automatic mode. I use the manual mode if I want to start it after dinner so I can set it for a couple of hours before I go to bed, because it is noisy. That's the only downside I have found. However running it for a couple hours then leaving it shut all night sometimes dries the content enough to add to the outdoor compost bin or soil. I usually run it another 2 hours in the morning for larger loads. The auto mode runs 4 hours no matter how full the bin is. I like that no plastic touches the compost. The bin is a sturdy metal. There is an odor but it’s not unpleasant. Ours usually has a woodsy smell with a hint if coffee. As some said recently when entering the house “It has a pleasant organic smell.”The unit is nice looking…much nicer than my food processor that sits on the countertop…. Most people that see it think it’s a bread machine.I would caution users to be very careful to securely lock the lids on the charcoal bins and avoid twisting the lids once they are filled and placed in their slot. I could not get my charcoal bins out the first time I tried to remove them. They seemed to be stuck, so I turned what I thought was the whole (small) bin trying to loosen it but it was only the lid that loosened so when I lifted the bin out, the lid detached and the bin full of little bitty charcoal pieces the size of ju-ju beads candy or tic tacs candy, went flying everywhere… I had to pick them out of the compartments of the machine with a long handled tweezers. It took my husband and I around a half hour to clean them all (hopefully all🥴) up. Everything they touched was of course black… I am grateful it was the small not the large charcoal bin that I spilled!Based on the few months I've had the machine, I love it and highly recommend it. I can’t speak to its longevity but I hope it lasts as long as I do!
