Based on the Leon Uris best-seller, Exodus (1960) is an epic tale about the late-1940s creation of the state of Israel. Passionately directed by Otto Preminger and adapted by Dalton Trumbo, the film features an all-star cast – Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Sal Mineo, Jill Haworth, Lee J. Cobb, David Opatoshu, and John Derek – in a sprawling and phenomenally moving narrative underscored by the Academy Award-winning music of the great Ernest Gold, featuring the restored original six-track stereo sound.

How Did Israel Become a Nation (again)?
About 3/4 of the American adult population was not alive in 1947 when Israel became a nation again. I was only 6 years old at the time and I had no idea how significant the event was. Even when I saw the movie Exodus during the 60's, I still did not appreciate the historical significance but I remember that I really enjoyed the movie and it gave me a better idea of the suffering of the Jewish people and how dedicated they were to keep their identity and their Jewish heritage intact. Also, it gave me an appreciation for how much they have been persecuted, yet willing to suffer to maintain their culture. Many of our politicians, professors, lawyers, law enforcement leaders, etc make their opinions and decisions about Israel and the Jewish people while being ignorant of its history. Viewing the movie could be a good start in "catching up". Even more important, what happened in 1947 was foretold by Ezekiel the prophet in Ezekiel 37:21-22. "and say to them, this is what the Sovereign Lord says; I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land. I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel......" What God said did happen and the movie reminds us that He is indeed sovereign. I highly recommend the film to all Christians who need a review of why Israel is important to them, and also as a means for them to teach and instruct their children. As for unbelievers, the movie is entertaining whether you believe in God and His Word or not.

How Palestine became Israel: Not perfect, but profound and impressive nonetheless.
EXODUS was an enormous (624 pp.) and enormously successful 1958 novel by Leon Uris that was transformed into this 1960 film, a smash hit in most countries except the UK, where its depiction of the ruling British forces in Palestine was considered offensive by some. It's a long movie (208 mins.) and just barely misses the onus of "tedious epic," probably owing to Otto Preminger's meticulous direction and its cavalcade of stars who are also good actors. Paul Newman plays the *sabra* Ari Ben Canaan, who heads a commando force prior to Israeli independence; Eva Marie Saint is his on-again, off-again American girlfriend, widowed nurse Kitty Fremont; Jill Haworth plays Karen, the teenaged girl who lived through the German camps; Sal Mineo turns in a career-making performance as Dov, the equally terrorized and far more dangerous Holocaust survivor who turns to terrorism. The British are represented chiefly by Ralph Richardson, who plays the general gently sympathetic to the Zionist cause; and Peter Lawford, who plays perhaps too well the block-headed Major who's a walking font of anti-Semitism.Objections can and have been raised over the years: shouldn't Paul Newman's character at least have curly hair? Was Eva Marie Saint too old for the role? Did Preminger and the screenplay compress the story a little too much -- such as insufficiently backgrounding the struggle between Ari's father (Lee J. Cobb) and uncle (David Opatoshu), who became a reformer and a terrorist, respectively? But there's no denying this is the best American film to tell the story of the formation of Israel out of Palestine in 1947-48. Make time to see this one.

Great epic entertainment
At nearly three and a half hours, this movie's premier has become a part of Hollywood folklore. It is said that at about the three hour mark, comedian Mort Sahl stood and shouted, "Otto Preminger, let my people go!". It may even be a true story.Long or not, this fictionalized account of smuggling Jews into Palestine after WW 2 and the eventual establishment of the nation of Israel in 1948 is an enthralling, even handed, nearly historically accurate movie. It may be too even handed. Except for a German Nazi henchman of the Grand Mufti, there is scarcely an individual hateful character in the movie. There were plenty of villains around during this time. Preminger's movie may have been even better if he had included the actual presence of some of them. Even so this epic is an easy five star movie featuring an ensemble cast of fine actors led by Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint.

what would you do, how would you feel if ...
what would you do, how would you feel if you were arrested, beaten, starved, placed in concentration camps, and murdered just because of your religious beliefs while others stood by, and did nothing. I teach my marines this lesson. they came and unjustly took my friend who lived across the street away. But they did not come for me so I did not protest. They came and unjustly took my friends who lived to the right and left of me. But they did not come for me, so I did not protest. they came for friends who lived behind me, but they did not come for me, so I did not protest. They came and unjustly took all those who lived in my neighbor hood. But they did not come for me, so I did not protest. Then they came for me, there was no one left to protest. this film is a must see for everyone, it shows in detail how jews from all over Europe who were in concentration camps before, and after ww2 try to migrate to Israel, but are stopped and placed in detention camps. undaunted they refuse to give up, risking their lives for the greater cause of Israeli independence.

Excellent story on Difficulties of the beginnings of Israel.
Followed the story of Jews trying to get to the promise land after WW II and before the UN resolution to create Israel. It showed the conflict within the Jewish group and a little of the conflict within the Moslem group and the British caught in between. Worth your time and entertaining to watch. Excellent production without digital help.

In Search of a Jewish Homeland
The story is so important that it should be shown to high school children. The production, including casting, was masterful! Paul Newman played the role of Ari, a man with a mission to establish a homeland for the Jews. And he, himself, was Jewish. It's all about the journey of displaced Jews from Hitler's Germany finding their place in the sun, the state of Israel. The historical conflict between the Arabs and the Jews was also addressed in an open, respectful manner. The movie is a must for everyone; Jews and Gentiles, Blacks and Whites.

Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint Shine in So-so Uris Adaption - DVD Has Issues
Since this is a product review, first off a few words about the DVD. The film is presented in a letterbox version for old 4:3 TV sets. Which means you get a small picture with broad black edges on all four sides on a modern widescreen set. If you use a zoom function the picture quality suffers. Also the bottom half of the subtitles (if you need them) is cut off. Overall picture and sound quality are perfectly adequate for a film from the time. The film itself is based on the novel by Leon Uris and is produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The screenplay is by Dalton Trumbo. While the story of Jewish settlers returning to Palestine to set up the state of Israel is, of course, historically true it's worth keeping in mind that the film is based on a work of fiction and is a Hollywood production that wants to appeal to American audiences. It's biased. Also, with a runtime of well over three hours it's very long. Even the solid perfomances of such ever delightful big screen stars as Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint, ably supported by the likes of Hugh Griffith, Ralph Richardson and many mnore, could not keep my mind from wandering after the first hour. Despite all efforts of filmmakers and actors, this film does not quite live up to the book it's based on. Still, if you like the stars or have an interest in the subject matter you could do far worse on a long slow night. I'd probably have given a four star rating if it wasn't for the less than ideal technical details of the DVD.

Birth of a Nation - Again.
Though the name is taken from biblical times and refers to the ship carrying hundreds of Jewish refugees out of Cypress, the main thrust of this story is set in the preceding months of the formation of a new nation in an old land. The aftermath of the hollocaust fresh in their minds, they persevere, making more sacrifices along the way.Seen from two main perspectives: the Jewish underground fighting force against British empirical mandate and the settlement Kabutz housing the young generations to build the land that their forefathers had once been a part of.From the perspective of storytelling and film production:This film isn't bad, but not brilliant.Made in the late 50's in Israel and released in 1960 it still remains fresh and innocent as well as ragged and weiry from the many millennium of enduring exiles, persecutions and executions upon the Jewish people with a final exodus to their own promised land.Even though it is well produced, the story is more of a calm meander through the lives of early settlers with buildups of national pride and political pressure being more of a backdrop. This then makes the story, plotline and developments somewhat slow.Unfortunate, as this film represents an important part of both Jewish and world history. If this film were to be made again it would be better written to show more individual lives affected as well as bringing the politics into the foreground. Further the risks of the early repatriation would be highlighted even more (tragic as this film already is).For such a famous film about such an important time in the birth of a nation, I would have expected more. One thing that stands out most is the iconic theme music that repeats itself throughout in a number of variations.

Seeking in the past.
I bought this on the strength and curious to know more about the work of Dalton Trumbo.I cannot recommend Brian Cranston s performance of Trumbo highly enough. As of Exodus a film I never even heard of. Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint are solid and believable performance. I don't normally go for political films but while on a forced sick leave this film past away an afternoon very nicely. Nice to have this one in my library now and a good companion to Trumbo.

Excellent follow up
It’s a good film but the DVD is constantly jamming. I have to forward it to make it start and miss chunks of the film. How do I get my money back?4/5/20 after I placed the above the company contacted me immediately and offered money back or a replacement. I wanted a replacement because the film is good. I was very impressed and thankful.

A very long movie, but quite enjoyable, however much sanitised it may appear. Paul Newman, however, cannot escape from the mannerisms which accompany method acting. Peter Lawford is somewhat "over the top" as the British officer. One interesting point, apart from the fact that the ill fated Sal Mineo also starred with Newman in "Somebody up there likes me", is that David Opatoshu, who appeared as the Jewish Irgun leader, also appeared some years later as a Jewish rabbi-priest in "Masada". I personally feel that the movie does full justice to the Leon Uris novel.
