XDUOO TA-66 High-Performance Tube Amplifier

If you own the HD800S and want to explore tube amps, I wouldn't walk but run to try this. I previously used the Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr but decided to buy this amp based off a recommendation on the Super Best Audio Friends forum. After comparing the two, I sold the ZDT Jr and kept this amp as I enjoyed the sound of it more in comparison. Compared to the ZDT Jr, this amp's bass impact is noticeably stronger, fixing what I always felt was the HD800S’s biggest weakness. But, the trade off is a slightly smaller soundstage, and for me, that’s okay. Treble is also slightly rolled off which helps with the HD800S' second weakness which is sibilance. The overall sound with this amp is smooth and impactful. There are two downsides to this amp. First is that the power button is in the back of the amp. It's a minor inconvenience to have to reach to the back to turn it off and on but I can live with it. Second is the humming. If you're experiencing humming, I would check to see if it's caused by the front tube. In my case, tapping the front tube with a remote control permanently fixed the problem (similar to fixing old TV static back in the day by tapping the TV). Your mileage may vary, but it’s worth trying before assuming the amp is defective. Despite the inconveniences, given the price, I would highly recommend this amp. If you’ve been searching for a budget amp to pair with the HD800S, this could be your endgame honestly. I've previously owned the Schiit Magni, Cavalli Audio Liquid Carbon (remember that amp?), and the Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr and this amp blows all of them out of the water.

Amazing quality for the price point. I connected this to the TAPE OUTPUT of my vintage Japanese solid-state receiver to act as a dedicated headphone amp for my record player. My Sennheiser 6XX's have never sounded so good.

Please don’t pay attention to the negative comments in the reviews. I just purchased this amplifier January, 2024. First it’s a fantastic machine the sound is the best I have ever heard. You need a pair of headphones of at least 300 ohms or better to get the sound you are looking for. I use a pair of Sennheiser HD600s. The sound is fantastic. I also used a pair of Kali UP-UNF speakers and they pair perfectly. It’s created a level of sound quality that keeps you listening for hours and hours. I can’t recommend this amplifier, Speakers, and Headphones enough. All are available on Amazon at a good price. Headphones.com wants 449.00 currently for the HD600s while Amazon has them for 314.00. Speakers are 299.00, and the amplifier is 229.00. Don’t know how long these prices will last of President Trump has his way with the tariffs so don’t wait before you see the price jump drastically higher. I am just a music lover like you who choose to point out fantastic products hoping to help others obtain a better experience with music.

UPDATE: The seller and manufacturer took a fast response and sent a second unit, which is working perfectly well. Noise floor is acceptably low and the sound impact is amazing, I use this unit as a preamp/buffer for a small JLH1969 2x15W Class-A solid state amp, the combination not only has full bass but also very clear and defined mids and non-fatiguing highs. Overall I am very satisfied. PREVIOUS: When I power on the amp, the transformer immediately start making a loud buzzing/humming sound that can be heard across the room. If I connect it as a preamp, the same noise is audibly amplified by my power amplifier, resulting in a very disturbing bottom noise. Although it colors the sound the way I wished it would, making the soundscape more vivid and with fuller bass, I don't think I can use this item with the constant hum it generates.

So fair warning I’m new to this but I really think that this with the smsl su1 and sennheiser hd 650 is a match made in heaven. The difference is especially notable in vocals and orchestral work compared to my halfway decent stereo. Yes it is a bit warm but I really like that presentation. It is built like a tank and looks very striking. I will say that I typically have to crank the volume to the 2-3 o clock position to get a loud sound out of it; I wish it had just a bit more power. Other than that I really like this thing.

Great little amp, nothing like the distinguished tube sound. Smooth and a tiny bit mellow. Make sure you use fairly high impedance headphones. To be honest I probably would have gone with a different amp by this company that would work with a larger amount of different headphones. My 38 ohm Denons will not work with this but my 300 ohm Senheiser HD660s cans sound beautiful through this amp. I’ll be using this amp for years to come, with the streamer and DAC I am using to feed it.

I've owned all sorts of much more expensive tube and solid state headphone amplifiers. As far as my HD800S and HD600 are concerned, this sets the bar. Very quiet for a tube amp. Virtually zero hum or hiss from day one. What was barely audible early on has now completely disappeared after the first couple dozen hours of listening. In my experience, finding a truly QUIET tube amp has been a challenge. With this quietness comes a level of clarity and detail retrieval that is truly impressive when combined with that sound staging and dimensionality that only tubes can provide. Highly recommend trying this one if you're new to this hobby, or even if you have lots of prior experience like myself. Send it back if it doesn't manage to impress.

I was kind of skeptical as this was my first inexpensive tube product. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of sound it help produce. It improved my Senn. 6xx. In addition, I used it as preamp to my vintage Pioneer amp and the combo was awesome. It definitely improved the sound stage and added warmth. I did upgraded the tubes that came with it. I found a General Electric tube for the larger tube and an Eastern European tube for the smaller one and it was magic and the tubes cost me under $30. Great value. Only thing I don’t know is how long will it last. It is small investment to experiment with the tube world. recommend it.

Eigentlich hatte ich Head-Fi schon lange zugunsten von HiFi aufgegeben. Ich habe eine große Stereoanlage bestehend aus einem Cambridge Verstärker, einem Rega CD-Player, einem Pro-Ject Plattenspieler und System Fidelity Regallautsprechern. Das war für mich das einzig wahre und hat in meinem damaligen Wohnzimmer gespielt wie eine 1. Dann kam der Umzug in eine neue Wohnung und damit auch die Stereoanlage in einen neuen Raum. Die Akustik des Raums desaströs, weil zu schmal und zu hallig und damit auch der Sound der Anlage um Welten schlechter als gewohnt. Der Frust war dementsprechend groß. Den Raum akustisch zu behandeln mit Teppichen und ähnlichem hätte wahrscheinlich ein wenig Verbesserung gebracht, war aber von den anderen Personen im Haushalt nicht gewünscht. Daher blieb nur der Weg zurück ins Head-Fi und der hat sich mehr als ausgezahlt, wie im folgenden näher ausgeführt werden soll. Röhrenverstärker sind generell großartig. Ich habe immer mit ihnen geliebäugelt, aber es hat sich nie ein Zeitpunkt ergeben an dem sie in meinem Leben und meinem Wohnzimmer zur Lautsprecherverstärkung platz gefunden hätten, denn : sie sind relativ groß, ungewöhnlich geformt , relativ leistungsschwach, relativ ineffizient, im Vergleich zu Transistorlösungen vor allem im Einstieg extrem teuer und bei der Lautsprecherpaarung, wie auch bei der Platzierung sehr pingelig, aber: Sie klingen wie nichts anderes auf der Welt. Im Kopfhörerbereich ist das anders. GANZ anders. Und daran haben XDUOO mit ihren röhrenbasierten Kopfhörerverstärkern einen wesentlichen Anteil. Produkte wie XDUOO TA-26 haben in Kopfhörerkreisen eine riesige Fangemeinde und so war es nicht verwunderlich, dass ich, als mit dem TA-66 eine verbesserte Version mit handverdrahtetem diskretem Innenaufbau und Stepped Attenuator für 40€ weniger auf den Markt kam, mich für diesen entschieden habe obwohl es zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch kaum Reviews und Erfahrungsberichte gab. Nach einiger Recherche und durch den Fund eines günstigen Angebots kaufte ich mir für meine Neuerwerbung offene Sennheiser HD 660 S2 Kopfhörer als Spielpartner, die sind zwar auch superb bekommen aber noch eine eigene Rezension. Wir reden hier vom Verstärker. Aufgrund des Preises und der Foreneinträge, die man über HiFi Produkte, vor allem Röhrenverstärker für Lautsprecher aus China unterhalb der 900€ Marke liest waren meine Erwartungen an das Produkt zumindest hinsichtlich Fertigung und Verarbeitung eher niedrig, doch hier wurde ich sofort nach der Ankunft des Geräts eines Besseren belehrt: Im nach außen hin sehr schmucklosen braunen Karton fanden sich zwischen 2 passgenauen Styroporformen, welche über dem Verstärker eine Deckplatte bildeten die Röhren. Darunter, ebenfalls passgenau in Styropor der Verstärker. Da wackelte nichts. Ziemlich egal, was im Paketsortierzentrum oder im Lieferwagen passiert, das Risiko, dass hier etwas zu Bruch ging war trotz der empfindlichen Technik sehr gering. Hier könnten sich viele europäische Hersteller etwas abschauen. Das Gerät selbst kommt mit einem dunkelgrauen Metallgehäuse und der dicken gefrästen Frontplatte sehr wertig daher, um die Öffnungen für die Röhrensockel auf der Oberseite wurde ebenfalls eine gefräste Aluminiumplatte angebracht. Es gibt keine scharfen Kanten, alles ist makellos gearbeitet und schreit Qualität. Nichteinmal der Lautstärkeregler ist aus Plastik, sondern aus rot lackiertem Aluminium. Dreht man ihn ertönt zufriedenstellend das Klicken des Stepped Attenuators, der gewährlsiten soll, dass links und rechts stets die genau gleiche Lautstärke anliegt. Zumindest was die Verarbeitung des Gehäuses betrifft kann X-Duoo also ohne Probleme mit Geräten des dreifachen Preises konkurrieren. Das einsetzen der Röhren war schnell erledigt, die große Pufferröhre (6N4P) glitt fast wie von selbst in den Sockel ohne groß Druck auszuüben, lediglich die Vorstufenröhre brauchte ein wenig Nachhilfe, da die Pins scheinbar nicht 100%ig an allen Punkten die gleichen Abstände aufwiesen wie die Fassung. Scheinbar war es hier aufgrund von Fertigungstoleranzen zu einer leichten Abweichung gekommen. Das passiert laut Foren häufiger bei Geräten und Röhren aller Preisklassen und war letztlich für mich, obwohl dies das erste Mal war, dass ich einen Röhrenverstärker selbst in Betrieb nahm kein großes Hindernis, es soll dennoch Erwähnung finden. Der erste Hörtest nach 20 minütigem Aufwärmen war das Album "Sumo" von Superjesus eine vor wilden Hard-Panning-Orgien und dynamischen Wechseln nur so strotzende Alternative Rock Platte und auch mehr oder weniger unmittelbar nach dem auspacken konnte der TA-66 hier bereits seine Stärken voll ausspielen. Ohne groß ins Detail zu gehen: Noch nie klang dieses Album in meinen Ohren derartig explosiv und mitreißend. Nach ca. einer ca. 1 wöchigen Einbrennzeit verschwand auch das leichte minimal wahrnehmbare weiße Rauschen, welches manchem Röhrenprodukt zu eigen ist und ca 2 Monaten intensiven Hörens kann ich sagen, dass ich nicht nur noch nie besser musikgehört habe, sondern dass ich tatsächlich nie mehr anders musikhören möchte. Sämtliche Details der Produktion sind klar fassbar aber nichts drängt sich auf, nur die Musik spricht. Alles wird wiedergegeben, nichts wird bewertet. Die Technik geht aus dem Weg und macht Platz. für die Musik. Einfach atemberaubend. Das ist nicht nur ein Einsteigerprodukt, das den Namen hinsichtlich Preis/Leistung verdient, sondern auch abseits davon etwas, dass ein Leben lang Freude machen wird. Ein Einsteigerprodukt fürs Leben also.

Från Sverige, wow säger jag bara, kör den med en liten sansui au-217 och vintage scan-dyna A25, märkte ingen skillnad första kvarten av lyssnande men sen BANG vaknade rören till liv och vilken fantastiskt ljudbild det blev alla instrument å sångröster vakna till liv, är mycket nöjd med denna, rekommenderas starkt!!!!/Niklas

This is my second tube amplifier, TA26 was sounding clean like solid state and so it was sold. Well TA66 IS is giving that stereotype of the sound, warmish, thicker, impactfull, my HD800S never sounded that punchy with juicy midrange and 6xx just gets sub that is not present on my solid state (Aune S17 Pro). As you could tell, I am very happy with a purchase and finally my HD800S is getting use now, on solid state is just too analytical and good for classical music only, now tubed makes justice to rock/metal. Fantastic product, if you want to try OTL tube amplifier this is a good start and sound is really 👍
