For the last 15 plus years or so certain engines have been equipped with very slim 12-point 14mm spark plugs that can sit extremely deep in the cylinder head and the passages to reach them are also barely bigger than the spark plug itself. That's where you need a thin walled magnetic socket with a joint in order to do spark plug changes on many BMWs and Mercedes engines. I had another one previously where instead of a magnet you had a rubber sleeve insert and the difference is so huge! Go with a magnet, hands down!
