I spent a few months in and around Valparaiso in 1967 as part of my four and a half year journey around the world on various boats. So although there were no 1967 photos published in the book the earlier 1963 shots brought back some wonderful memories. I may be remembering through rose tinted glasses but yes, it was a really grubby town but it had a kind of magical atmosphere. What was so strange was that Vina del Mar, a really up market suburb on the cliff tops above, was stunning and showed none of the poverty below. The presentation of the book without a traditional jacket was interesting. I found some of the written word a little tough and although my Spanish is pretty rudimentary it might have been interesting to read the original Spanish text. However the photos themselves were great.

This is a great book. You know that Sergio Larrain uses film which makes the images immediate and very domestic. A book to return to time and time again and smell the salt from the sea

Masterpiece
This book is a masterpiece. Timeless, like "The Decisive Moment" by Cartier-Bresson or "The Americans" by Robert Frank. Excellent printed, wonderful format. A great book to learn photography from a true master.

Extraordinary
Breathtakingly good. In an age when most photographers seem to have the press release prepared before having shot the pictures, Larrain shows the beauty that can be revealed when one is in the moment and without expectations. Up their with The Decisive Moment and American Photographs.
