Typhoon Club (4K ULTRA HD + Blu-ray) [4K UHD]

One of the greatest films, in an exceptionally fine presentation.
Typhoon Club is a Japanese film from the 80s, inspired by The Breakfast Club, but far more acerbic and imaginative, with satirical, comic undertones the John Hughes movie never managed. Teens marooned in a backwater high school end up alone together in their high school when a typhoon hits. The storm brings their desires, their hopes and frustrations, and mostly their wild, uncontainable youthful energy out in ways no one expects. The filmmaking is done with a series of very long, roving takes, and the cast of authentic teenagers give spectacular performances. Scenes have a sort of ambiguity to them, shifting from humor to horror unexpectedly. The film experience is unique in nearly every way, and the Cinema Guild discs offer a radiant transfer of the beautifully-restored image for this rare, very unique film.Director Shinji Somai's greatest film, P.P. Rider, has also been restored, I believe, and may be released by Cinema Guild as well. Supporting this film is potentially a way to encourage Cinema Guild to release that surrealistic masterpiece. And this movie is mysterious and beautiful and horrifying and funny, often in equal measure––so it should not disappoint. Take a look at a unique moment in Japanese filmmaking, the likes of which most movie fans have probably never seen before now!
