Delay and Pray: Permanent Weight Loss Through Spiritual Fasting

I don’t even know where to begin. I love everything about this book and had a hard time putting it down. It is a book I will keep going back to over and over again. It was inspiring, well written, informative, and captivating. There are so many things I love; the testimonies, spaces to write down some thought work, and the prayers at the end of each chapter to name a few. I have lost 15 pounds so far and it is the first time in my life I’m not in a rush to lose weight. Instead I am enjoying the process while growing closer to God. I love how I’m focused on my daily surrender and dependence on Jesus instead of on myself and my own willpower. I love focusing on Jesus, Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and the liturgical calendar while sacrificing SFA for the greater good of others, myself, and my family all while attaining weight loss. It is absolutely genius! I have come to enjoy dining in with Jesus.. it feels powerful. Instead of trying to lose weight out of despair this program has taught me how to surrender to Jesus for weight loss because he can help me do what I cannot on my own. The fact is Jesus is the key… He is more powerful than I will ever be on my own and suddenly it is like a switch has been flipped. For Jesus, delaying SFA while praying my son back to church, my friends kids back to church, the healing of another one of my kids, world peace, souls in purgatory, fallen away Catholics, atheists (I could go on and on)… suddenly makes fasting, delaying, and praying SO fulfilling and has given me peace in my soul. Self denial and sacrifice, which was so painful and defeating in the past has become such a comfort knowing it is making me grow closer to Jesus. This book and Beth’s program has taught me so much. I really never knew what it meant to sacrifice for Jesus, to make offerings to God as prayer for a special intention ….. This program, through Jesus of course, has given me the grace to finally understand what that all means. Something that can only be accomplished through and with Jesus. Sorry this is so long but there are so many positive things to note about this book and is worth every penny. You will not be disappointed!

While this book might promote itself as a way to use fasting as a weight loss method it really is about so much more. What may begin as a weight loss journey quickly becomes more about growing closer to God and Jesus through spiritual fasting. The weight loss is just the cherry on top as one learns how to fast. I especially like the blank pages at the end of the chapters. These pages help get you started on what your thoughts really are. And as Beth explains in the book thoughts always lead to actions and actions always lead to results. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving - if you have ever wanted to learn how to do the fasting part then this is the book to lead you on your fasting journey and more importantly to becoming a Saint.

This book provides an amazing explanation of spiritual fasting and how to logistically do it for everyone. It explains harmful thought patterns that can lead to thinking we are unable to fast. There are in depth explanations about how our biology is meant to be on an eat, fast, feast cycle. I love the journaling pages where I could write down how to directly apply the concepts to my own life. I can’t wait to write down spiritual fasting goals and prayers to draw myself and loved ones into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

This book gives practical advice on how to spiritually fast. It is easy to read and understand. I love the prayers included to help with the process along the way. The exercises give helpful insight into applying Beth’s principles to my life. The book has lots of examples, quotes from scripture and saints. The client stories and sample coaching are fun to read. The book is a great introduction to the Delay and Pray method. I’ve been working Beth in her program and have lost 30lbs so far! I’ve gained spiritual growth and virtue along the way.

I love that this is not a diet! It’s a faith walk to health and wellness - through practices of discipline and lots of prayer. With that a deeper relationship with Jesus and partner in the great adventure of prayer with the King!

It starts out with a desire to lose weight but it ends up with an unexpected deep dive into your spiritual journey bringing you closer to God in ways you never imagined. Great book to add Spiritual Fasting to your spiritual toolkit.

I just finished reading Delay and Pray, and it is excellent. I found Beth Bubik back in September of 2023, and I wanted to take in everything she had to offer from her social media posts, to her Delay and Pray podcast, to her group coaching experience. When I found out she was writing a book, I knew it would be imperative to have it.Delay and Pray has changed my life and my family's life. I had been a Lifetime member of WW since 1991, and was very committed to it. I was pretty content with my weight (at goal) too. That being said I felt like I was missing something. Every Lent I would fast and pray, and it helped me feel closer to God and to my Catholic faith. I was in search of something more, something that would help me go beyond the season of Lent.It was at that time, while searching, that I found Beth's Delay and Pray. It was a game changer. I began to fast from sugar, flour and alcohol till after Mass on Saturday evening. Then it was time to "feast" but in a balanced, healthier way. I felt more at peace. I journaled daily. I noted my thoughts and how it affected my choices and actions.Delay and Pray took me way beyond my relationship with food. The book details exactly how to fast and feast in a healthy way and how to glorify God in your thoughts, words and actions. I have a list of amazing things that have happened in my life since starting Delay and Pray. I also ended my membership with WW because I no longer have a need for it.
