It can be used as a wall phone. It can be used as a desk phone or a wall phone. **Q: What are the "2 non-standard batteries required"? Will phone work in a power failure?** A: That description about "2 non-standard batteries" appears to be in error. The manual for this phone is available at http://cdn-media-att.vtp-media.com/ecp/documents//product_Product/1889//8359/CL4940_UM_6.pdf. If you look through the manual carefully, you will see that it specifies a power adapter, but makes no mention of batteries. On page 13 of the manual, it says:This telephone provides minimal functionality during a power failure. When AC power is not available, the screen is blank and many telephone features do not function. Only touch-tone dialing and handset volume adjustment are supported. The telephone uses power from the telephone line to enable you to make and answer calls using only the handset and dialing keys. **Q: can you record your own voice for this answer machine or do you have to use pre-recorded message provided by mfg.** A: You have a choice of using the automatic announcement or you can make your own by pressing Menu Select. Press it again and select Answering System. Then press ID or DIR to select "Record New" The system will tell you to announce your message, then press 5 when you are done. Then your own announcement will play. To listen to your own announcement again, scroll to "Play Current" and press Menu/Select. You can always change your message or go back to the recorded announcement. Just do things in reverse. The recorded announcement is a permanent part of the system, so you don't have to worry about it being deleted. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul **Q: Is the LCD display light always on or just when callings are coming through or in use?** A: The light is only on when a call comes through and in use. Once you hang up it turns off. ## Frequently Bought Together - AT&T CL4940 Corded Standard Phone with Answering System and Backlit Display, White - Ubramac 15 Feet Long Telephone Extension Cord Phone Cable Line Wire, with Standard RJ11 Plug and 1 in-Line Couplers and 15 Cable Clip Holders-White - SOUTHWESTERN BELL S60067 White Handset Cord 12 Feet --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.nl/products/61987606-at-and-t-cl4940-corded-standard-phone-with-answering-system](https://www.desertcart.nl/products/61987606-at-and-t-cl4940-corded-standard-phone-with-answering-system) --- *Product available on Desertcart Netherlands* *Store origin: NL* *Last updated: 2026-11-02*
