This is the pad required by my son's middle school band program. He enjoys practicing on it. I cannot compare it to other pads, but

Title says it's a 9.5" pad but the product information says 12" -- I'm thinking the latter is a typo. What's the size of the one you received?

The one I received is approx. 9.5", which is a great size to travel with.

Is the whole pad 9.5", or just the playing surface?

The overall pad is 9.5".the playing surface is 8.5" this is the best drum pad l have used yet.

Is the playing surface a moongel type ( soft, mushy ) or is it the typical rubbery surface?

It's a special material called dark matter that they use. It's not soft or mushy. I would say it's more of a hard surface
