By twisting it however much, more or less came out. The Pentel Sharp was among the first, if not the very first pencil to use a push-button that advanced the lead a Specific Amount with every click. This is what was "automatic"--just the right amount of lead advancing to the tip with a single, quick of a button. It was novel at the time, and the term "automatic" was applied to many things in the 70s that gained the effect of push-button operation, or hands-free help, like self-winding automatic watches, switch-blades, automatic transmissions, automatic umbrellas, auto shut-off faucets and sensors.
