Q: Is this gate able to stay open when necessary?

Yes it can stay open if needed. It has a spring in it to close but if you go past it , the gate stays open. I love mine!

Q: can the length of the gate be extended or decreased as needed or are you stuck with the length you buy?

There is an extension that adds about 2 inches to the length then the mounting (adjustable screws with pads - so no drilling) will buy you a few more inches of length. You can't shorten the length but you can purchase different length gates.

Q: How many inches wide is the doorway that you walk through?

36 inches. You can adjust it to fit firmly, and it doesn't damage the door frame at all. This thing is awesome. Easy to setup, and easy to walk in and out. Highly recommend.

Q: Has anyone had a cat squeeze out?

I have a few too many adult cats and the gate is up all day, not one has squeezed by. Kittens might be a different story.
