The ICU Book

Good reference book for Nurses
I am a Senior Nursing Student doing my practicum on a large Intensive Care Unit. This book along with the little ICU book is a good reference for any one in critical care. Our Med/Surg Nursing Textbooks only graze over or do not cover some of the information need for critical care. There is very little discussion of Central Venous Pressure monitoring, Balloon Pumps, Neuro Surgical devices such as a ventriculostomy in school.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about critical care nursing. Not the best book to sit down and read, but well worth it for reference. Highly recommend splurging for the this one instead of the Little ICU book. I got both and got to where I would haul around the larger book for more information.UPDATEI graduated school and am now working at a busy Level 2 Trauma Center as an ER nurse. This book is an essential reference for the ER,or Critical Care Nurse.

ICU Book
I am a nurse practitioner who recently read this text from cover to cover to review concepts needed for a job change from ambulatory family practice to in-patient care. The book is a well written, comprehensive overview of critical care medicine that is relevant to all hospital medicine. I like how well the author relates physiology to clinical practice. The order of information flows in a logical sequence and by the end of the book every system is described. I had very specific educational goals that I wanted to achieve when I purchased this book and was not disappointed.

The book that makes one street smart in the ICU
I read this book prior to starting my sub-I in the MICU. This is a one-of-a-kind book that combines basic physiology behind clinical decision making with the day-to-day practices at the bedside. The chapters are concise and to the point, making the book an easy read for all of us with little time (and patience). I kept it in the workroom and referred to it every day, and I know that I will be using it soon for my ICU months as a resident. Read it, use it, and benefit. I wish there is an equivalent book for the floor.

A GOOD ICU REVIEW BOOK
The ICU Book is a selective (but fairly comprehensive) review of ICU topics from largely one doctor's perspective. (The 2007 edition has "contributions" from a second doctor.) That it's written by one person keeps a consistency in style but there are several controversial points raised where it's hard to tell whether this is now hard-science proven standard of care or the author's preference. There are many typographical errors (including drug dosages) and most of the references are from the 1990's and earlier; few references are after 2000.All in all, it's a well written basic review of ICU topics but should be read knowing this is one person's approach to care. It's a good starter for residents and a good review book for the Critical Care boards.

Excellent book
I love this book. It has given me a really solid foundation on the fundamentals of critical care management and really made me sound like a rockstar on rounds. I highly recommend it - definitely worth the price.Do note though - and Marino says it in his intro - that this really is *his* book. I can barely find fault with it and it is highly referenced, but as always, evidence changes and a couple minor management points have been updated since this edition came out. But you absolutely can't go wrong with the fundamentals he presents.

Excellent preparation for the ICU
I am a soon to be Medicine intern at Stanford, and decided to read this book cover to cover before starting my residency. It is unbelievably helpful in explaining concepts which I have "danced around" understanding but never truly understood. It really goes into even the details of procedures that one might be embarrassed to ask about to an attending. Really easy to read, I would say the only prereqs to understanding the material within are a medicine and surgery clerkship.

TERRIBLE BINDING. After reading for less than one month
Find this book to be not-so-readable. TERRIBLE BINDING. After reading for less than one month, the binding came apart and all of the pages split into several pieces and came apart from the back. I was treating book with much care but reading daily. Disappointing to have the binding fail on me. Think I will be using Washington Manual or Massachusetts pocket medicine more. No colour. I notice that The ICU book states that anticholinergics are cornerstone for treating AECOPD while Washington says SABA. Perhaps this is not of material difference as one would usually use both, but I am curious about some of these differences. No case scenarios, so it isn't always that clear how the author recommends applying certain aspects of theory. Not so useful as a quick reference (especially now because of the extreme binding failure!)

Perfect for New to ICU nurses
As a new ICU nurse, I heard from several experienced nurses that the ICU Book would be my "go-to." The newest (4th) edition was still a bit too pricy for me, so I did my research on the older (but equally as wonderful) editions and decided on the 3rd edition. While some of the information (mainly drug regimens and pharmaceutical information) may be a bit out of date, I am 100% convinced this was the perfect purchase for me. After I finish this edition, I may browse at my co-workers newest edition to decide if shelling out the extra money for the newest edition will be worth my time (and money).

Thumbs up
I ordered this some time ago but did not come around to write an oppinion, the book is excellent, as I already knew it would be sinceI did see its contents before (I had a digital copy), I read it some time ago and was thrilled by both the easealy digestable writing style and a level of detail in the texts, there are few areas in witch it fell a bit short but that said the aforementioned parts are not an everyday occurence and possibly not even in the direct scope of interest for a surgical/anesthesiology staffed ICU...

There is no complete book for ICU, but this little book has lots of very helpful information which will be a handy reference. Worth the price.
