If baseball were perfect, it wouldn't be: Jacoby at least gets that right.
This book is much like a Detroit Tigers game: starts out great, but by the middle innings turns into a real mess. I agree with everything Jacoby says here, but, then again, I fit the baseball demographic - over fifty, white, middle-class. To further nerdify things, I don't have a television, and spend more that thirty-eight minutes a day reading (and just last week I watched the entire seventh game of the 1952 World Series - Yankees/Dodgers - on Youtube, two hours and fifty-nine minutes; it was great!). I think Jacoby is a great fan and very good writer, but I do think she misses an opportunity here to discuss more than fantasy baseball, a tangent she goes off on and a topic she can't seem to drop. This book is worth reading (you can skip the fantasy baseball tirade), but Mark Kingwell's Fail Better: Why Baseball Matters (Biblioasis, 2017) is a much better discussion of baseball and its importance in the greater scheme of life. Get it from the library or skim through it on your Kindle, riding the subway. The book is not exactly an "out" - let's score it a "fielder's choice" - she got to first base with this book, but the lead runner was forced at second. Typical Tiger offense.

A good read with plenty of food for thought.
While I agreed with some points and disagreed with others, the overall premise is sound. Definitely worth a read!

Four Stars
Thoughtful meditation on the improtsnce of baseball. A little repetitive--editing would have helped.

A kindergarten guide to a girl who likes baseball
Book should be renamed, i have a good publishing company so i wrote a baseball book. A basic understanding of baseball, a great book if you know her, a lousy book if you want convincing arguments on the importance of baseball. Could i do better? Honestly? Yes.

Intelligent and Well-Informed--and a good read
Excellent book . . . if you care at all about baseball (or maybe just want to care), read this book.
