Northern Exposure: Season 5

So glad this show made it to Amazon!
For years I was so upset to only be able to find these on DVD at very high cost, especially because DVDs were already phasing out almost entirely. I remember this show from being very young, watched it again as an adult on crappy youtube versions, then FINALLY, it made it to Amazon! It’s still expensive, but at least I was able to purchase it and can now watch it anywhere. So glad!

a great comedy and friendly hometown movie
I really enjoyed this show when it first came out. It is hard to find a friendly comedy with good taste. I can never find this on show reruns. Don't know why.

I have been waiting for this for 20 years!
Love, love, love, northern exposure and so happy to see it was on Amazon prime. Had most of the original music (which I know was an issue in streaming rights). I bought all of the seasons and have watched them over and over again. The only other option to see Northern exposure right now is to order the DVD, but to have it streaming and in my prime and anywhere I am I just love this it is aged so well so much is so accurate and so telling. Give it a try!

BEST SHOW EVER ON TV, period.
Northern Exposure is THE BEST U.S. television show ever created. Interesting, quirky, hilarious, dramatic, and profound. Those are a few words to describe the amazing writing found within Northern Exposure. The actors all have wonderful chemistry too. It is a great ensemble cast. I love the fact that Native Americans are included within this - as well they should be considering the content. I recommend EVERYONE buy at least the first 5 seasons of this show (season 6 is good but some integral parts are missing). My only complaint is small but potent .... along with soooo many other Northern Exposure officionados, I am soooooo thoroughly disappointed - no, pissed - pissed that they couldn't make the extra effort to get ALL of the original music featured on the show. The theme song and a few other themes are still intact, but the ending music (often popular, vintage, or unexpectedly wonderful choices) were just like Sicily's "itinerant dj" - an integral part and made the profound moments of the show really hit home. The music during the original airing of the show was selected with much care and consideration. It is just such a total let down to fans to not be able to experience the entirety of the experience that was/is Northern Exposure. And ... the music which they replaced the originals with is for the most part sooooo completely lame and completely lacks the impact that the original selections did. Thank goodness there were a few artists (e.g. Enya's "Caribbean Blue" - season 3, episode 20 "The Final Frontier") who were generous enough to allow them to use her songs in syndication. Thank you Enya.Anyway ... even though the wonderful musical aspect of the show is largely missing, it is still miles above anything else that has ever been on television. Very worth your money. This review can basically apply to all the seasons.

Good (minor prior season spoilers)
+++Warning, this will contain a minor spoiler from season four, but no major season five giveaways+++Season five of Northern Exposure is kind of a double-edged sword for me. There are some very good episodes in it, but you can also tell that this was the point at which Rob Morrow's contract situation came to a head without either side willing to budge, and, as a result, his role was much reduced. There are some episodes in which Joel is basically an ancillary character or barely appears at all. That is fine for an episode or two, but it happened a lot during this season. That said, there are some very good episodes in the season, including the episode in which Shelly hallucinates her daughter at various stages of her life (which includes a very young Kaley Cuoco), an episode in which Maggie agrees to be homecoming queen for the local high school (which includes a young Jack Black), and an episode in which the residents of the town have dreams about one another. In the DVD set, the only bonus content is just under 40-minutes of deleted scenes. There are no gag reels, commentary tracks, behind-the-scenes material, or the like. And, of course, there is the issue with the music. As is the case with the DVD releases from season two or three, Universal did not pay for the rights to some of the songs that played when the show originally aired, opting instead to replace the songs with canned instrumental music. In some cases, it did not really matter (aside from being kind of annoying), but in the cases in which the songs directly tied into the storyline of the episodes, it definitely takes something away. As far as I know, the only way to get the episodes with the original music is to pay for the imports (such as the Region 2 Blu-Ray complete series) because the show was released with the original music in Europe. This means you need a DVD or Blu-Ray player that can play Region 2 discs and will pay higher prices for the discs themselves.Overall, the season is good, but not as good as it was in the first few seasons. For me, this in large part because Rob Morrow, who was clearly the series lead, had a much-reduced role as the season went on. It did not seem like he was phoning his performances in or not doing a good job with the character, because when he was on screen his performance was as good as in the prior seasons, but the show without him was just not the same. That said, the season is still worth watching.

At Last! No More Swapping DVDs in and Out!
And the original music. Weird that one season isn't available in HD. What's that about?

Northern Exposure - Season 5 Widescreen
I bought Season 5 because I adore Northern Exposure and all of its characters, especially Darren Burrows. I highly recommend this.

5 for 5.
Northern Exposure seasons 1-5 are some of the best examples of American television in the 1990's. They still outshine contemporary counterparts and remain fairly unique. They have that cutesy romantic lala-land quality that shows like Dawson's Creek popularised with younger viewers, but the writing here is simply untouchable. The ideas it deals with and its zany grasp of reality/fantasy is incredible. Surprisingly ponderous and always unpredictable make the kitsch setup completely forgivable and the softer moments seem more genuine rather than contrived by middle-aged men in swanky offices, hunting for the teen dollar.

This is the best show in television history. Way ahead of its time!

The show is still very amusing to watch and was so well made it has stood the test of time
We have been re-watching the whole series on DVD as we loved the show when it was first broadcast (so very long ago!) and wanted to introduce it to our 13 year old daughter who loves watching American comedy from the 80's and 90's. The show is still very amusing to watch and was so well made it has stood the test of time.

Northern Exposure revisited
I loved this series when it was originally broadcast and must have mentioned it enough for my daughter to remember from he early childhood, she bought me Season 2 on DVD and I have since then bought one season almost every month since. It is a great programme with some really great characters and storylines A great blast from the past. My duaghter who was too young to stay up and watch it when it was originally broadcast has really enjoyed watching it too and introducing her husband to the wonders of inhabitants of Cicely Alsaka
