Middle of the Road
Writer Bob Budiansky created an over-arching story during the first volume, which concentrated on a handful of recurring characters. Unfortunately, the second volume is much more meandering, with the pressures of introducing new Transformers taking it's toll as toy production ramped up. The result, is a much more piecemeal collection of tales, where each new story seems to see the introduction of a clutch of new names, which feels especially forced when the combining teams show up.He does, however, manage to utilize human characters such as Circuit Breaker and Donny Finkleberg to inject some character; and continues to use Megatron, Shockwave and Prime to provide some semblance of continuity. The stories are still enjoyable, though haven't aged as well as Simon Furman's UK strips - with one exception. Buried in here is the two part Return to Cybertron. This story brings a real gravity to the Transformers Civil War, with a mad dictator, death camps and the Autobots presented as a resistance movement. It's still my favourite of Budiansky's work, and the star of the show here.Don Perlin is the artist on almost all of the strips here, and I struggle to have much feeling either way on his work. There never seems to be any stand out panes, and a lot of it is workmanlike - on the other hand, it's always easily followed and never offensive. A bit middle of the road, which probably sums up this volume when taken as a whole. I'd still recommend it if you enjoyed them back in the day.

Target 1984
Bought this book out of nostagia for the Transformers comic I used to get as a child - certainly a superior incarnation than the current films. The book comes with a bit of background about how it came to be created, which is quite interesting.Credit is deserved for creating an interesting plot around something which could have been seen as a cynical marketing exercise.Did find I got tired of the constant changing of the characters eventually, but the comics did have a good run and there were some exciting stories with clever ideas.
