Fascinating journey thru the science of spirituality and how to achieve deeper awareness/wellbeing
A beautiful book - it approaches spirituality in such an egalitarian way. It considers many religions and none, and delves into the true nature of transcendent spirituality, making a compelling case for the need for it to be a living practice that finds our way into all aspects of our lives - in simple ways yet that aren't necessarily easy. For instance, kindness is all the more challenging when it's towards someone who annoys us. And therein lies the spiritual gain - the difficult choice that leads to the better result. The book focuses on something that is easily lost or sidestepped in a culture that is very comfortable with the inward, self-analysing gaze. It shows simple strategies for shining our light outward, in service to others, and looks at the tangible result of this in our daily life, which the science backs up: increased sense of wellbeing, connection, contentment. If we've been duped into thinking that this can come from fulfilling material hunger, this book outlines why this leaves us often feeling hollow - and how to combat it. And the author, being a psychologist, reveals the science that backs this up.It's a very interesting journey in some ways through the science of spirituality, but it's written with heart, mindfulness and an awareness of right-brained, as well as left-brained thinking. Fascinating, practical and very comforting.
