What version does it have?

It does not have a version, it uses the internal Bluetooth that’s already there to extend the range. I purchased this and it definitely gave me more range for my Bluetooth 4.0. My Mac Pro is under a table with metal bars and I believe it’s interferring with my signal so I used the long cable it came with and put the antenna on top of my desk and it worked.

How can I tell if the antenna is actually connected? I'm getting bluetooth connectivity but I'm not sure its any better than it was (mac 2012 tower)

If you hold the option key down while selecting your device in the bluetooth menu bar icon, it will give you a measure of your signal strength.

Does this work on a 2017 Macbook Pro?

No, unfortunately, this won't work with a 2017 MacBook Pro.
